The Thames Water hosepipe ban now affects over 10 million customers in London and the Thames valley, part of a broader crisis pushing England and Wales toward drought status. With 23 million people under restrictions by this weekend, water companies struggle to meet demand after record dry weather.
Why the Thames Water Hosepipe Ban Was Implemented
Months of dry, hot weather, including three heatwaves and the driest spring on record, have severely depleted water supplies. Thames Water reported just 40% of normal rainfall during spring, while demand surged 10% higher in the Thames valley and 7% in London. The 100 million liter-per-day increase equals adding the entire city of Manchester to the network.

Water Companies Already Under Restrictions
Thames Water joins South East Water, which extended its ban to 2.4 million customers in Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, and Berkshire. Five other water companies have already imposed bans, covering vast areas of southern England.
| Water Company | Customers Affected | Region |
|---|---|---|
| Thames Water | 10+ million | London & Thames Valley |
| South East Water | 2.4 million | Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire |
| Other Companies | ~10.6 million | Kent, East Anglia, West Midlands, etc. |
National Drought Group Declares Prolonged Dry Weather
The National Drought Group (NDG) identified eight areas in prolonged dry weather, the stage before official drought: East Anglia, West Midlands, Devon, Cornwall and Isles of Scilly, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire, Hertfordshire and London, Wessex, Thames, and Solent and the South Downs. Despite a wet winter, drought now seems inevitable.
Key Takeaways for Residents
- Hosepipe ban starts Thursday for Thames Water customers; comply immediately to avoid fines.
- Reduce outdoor water use: watering gardens, washing cars, and filling pools are prohibited.
- Indoor conservation matters: fix leaks, take shorter showers, and run full washing loads.
- Monitor local water company updates for ban extensions or drought declarations.
How to Prepare for the Hosepipe Ban and Potential Drought
Residents can take simple steps to reduce water usage. Install water-efficient fixtures, collect rainwater for plants, and use a broom instead of a hose for driveways. Businesses should audit water use and implement conservation plans.
