The US-Saudi nuclear deal has sparked intense debate over energy security and nuclear proliferation. Under a 30-year agreement, the United States will help Saudi Arabia build a civilian nuclear program using American technology, potentially including domestic uranium enrichment.
What Is the US-Saudi Nuclear Deal?
The deal, announced by US energy secretary Chris Wright, aims to meet Saudi Arabia’s growing energy needs while freeing up more oil for export. It is worth tens of billions of dollars and prevents competitors like China and Russia from gaining influence in the region.

The agreement continues efforts from the Biden administration, which linked nuclear cooperation to Saudi normalization with Israel. That condition was dropped after the October 7 Hamas attack and the Gaza war.
Why Does Uranium Enrichment Cause Concern?
The core issue is whether Saudi Arabia will be allowed to enrich uranium on its soil. A joint US-Saudi study will determine if a domestic enrichment facility is necessary. If approved, it could set a precedent for other nations and heighten proliferation risks in the volatile Middle East.
Critics worry that enrichment capabilities could be diverted to military purposes, similar to concerns over Iran’s nuclear program. The two-year study leaves the final decision to the next US president.
Key Provisions of the Deal
- American companies lead nuclear infrastructure development
- 30-year cooperation agreement worth tens of billions
- Potential domestic uranium enrichment after a feasibility study
- Excludes China and Russia from Saudi nuclear projects
Comparison: US-Saudi Deal vs. Iran Nuclear Deal
| Feature | US-Saudi Deal | Iran Nuclear Deal (JCPOA) |
|---|---|---|
| Enrichment allowed | Possible after study | Limited, monitored |
| Duration | 30 years | 10-15 years |
| International oversight | US-led | UN and IAEA |
| Primary concern | Proliferation risk | Weaponization |
What Are the Broader Implications?
The deal could reshape Middle Eastern geopolitics. By bypassing the Israel normalization requirement, the Trump administration prioritizes energy and strategic competition with China and Russia.
However, many in Washington fear that domestic enrichment in Saudi Arabia could trigger a regional arms race. Neighboring countries may seek similar capabilities, undermining non-proliferation efforts.

Why is the US-Saudi nuclear deal controversial?
Critics fear that uranium enrichment could lead to nuclear weapons proliferation, destabilizing the Middle East and undermining global non-proliferation treaties.
How does this deal affect oil markets?
By using nuclear power for domestic electricity, Saudi Arabia can free up more oil for export, potentially increasing global supply and influencing prices.
