Rock Paper Scissors Origins: Who Invented the Game? 2026

Who invented rock paper scissors? This classic hand game has fascinated children and adults for centuries, and its origins are as intriguing as the game itself. In this article, we explore the surprising history behind this beloved pastime, answer common questions, and share tips to master it.

The Ancient Roots of Rock Paper Scissors

Rock paper scissors, also known as jan-ken-pon in Japan, did not emerge overnight. Its earliest known ancestor dates back to China's Han Dynasty (around 206 BCE to 220 CE), where a game called shoushiling involved hand gestures representing a frog, a snake, and a slug. Over time, these symbols evolved into the rock, paper, and scissors we know today.

The game spread to Japan in the 17th century, where it became popular as a drinking game and later as a children's pastime. The modern version, with its iconic three gestures, was standardized in Japan and eventually traveled to the West in the early 20th century.

Why Is It Called "Rock Paper Scissors"?

The name is straightforward: each gesture beats one and loses to another. Rock crushes scissors, scissors cut paper, and paper covers rock. This simple cyclical logic makes it a perfect game of chance and strategy, appealing to people of all ages.

The Global Variations

While the core rules remain universal, different cultures have added their own twists. For instance, in Indonesia, the game uses an elephant, a human, and an ant. In some regions, players add extra gestures like Spock or lizard to increase complexity, as popularized by the TV show The Big Bang Theory.

Rock Paper Scissors in Modern Culture

Today, rock paper scissors is more than just a kids' game. It's used in professional tournaments, as a decision-making tool in business, and even in scientific research to study human psychology and game theory. The World Rock Paper Scissors Association hosts international championships with substantial prize money, proving that this simple game has serious appeal.

Strategies to Win

Although it seems random, there are psychological patterns that can give you an edge. Studies suggest that beginners often throw rock first, so throwing paper might be a smart opening move. Also, people tend to repeat a winning gesture, so if you lose to scissors, consider throwing rock next.
