Bryson DeChambeau suffered a spectacular collapse in the final round of The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, turning a promising position into a triple-bogey disaster that ended his title hopes. The American golfer, known for his scientific approach and polarizing personality, saw his round unravel in devastating fashion on the 11th hole.
How Bryson DeChambeau's Round Fell Apart
Starting the day at minus five, DeChambeau was four shots off the clubhouse lead with eight holes to play. However, he had not made a single birdie all day, signaling trouble. The pivotal moment came on the par-four 11th, where his driver flew 301 yards into thick rough on the left. His second shot traveled just eight yards, and his third flew into deep fescue on the right, eventually being declared unplayable.

The penalty and subsequent drop led to a triple-bogey seven, effectively ending his chances. The crowd, sensing the drama, began chanting "Rory! Rory McIlroy!"—a pointed reminder of his ongoing feud with the Northern Irish star.
Comparison: DeChambeau vs. Spieth's 2017 Comeback
| Player | Year | Holes Remaining | Shots Behind | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jordan Spieth | 2017 | 9 | 4 | Won (Claret Jug) |
| Bryson DeChambeau | 2023 | 8 | 4 | Triple bogey, lost |
While Spieth famously made up four shots on the back nine at Royal Birkdale in 2017 to win the Claret Jug, DeChambeau's attempt ended in a nightmare. The contrast highlights how fine the margins are in major championship golf.
Fan Reaction and the Rory McIlroy Factor
Despite Friday's controversy over a two-shot penalty and McIlroy accusing him of "holding the tournament hostage," DeChambeau enjoyed strong support early in his round. The crowd around the 1st tee was 10 deep, with many young fans and children—an unusual sight in golf. One fan shouted, "Rory's going to buy you a pint after!" drawing laughter.
However, the mood turned sour after the triple bogey, with the crowd's chants shifting to McIlroy's name. The pantomime villain dynamic was in full display, as DeChambeau's polarizing reputation drew both cheers and jeers.
