The Wallabies face Italy in a must-win Test in Perth as coach Joe Schmidt's era staggers to a close, with Australian rugby needing a powerful response after six straight losses. The pressure is immense on Schmidt's men to avoid a seventh defeat, which would mark their worst run since 2016. Fans are desperate for a turnaround before the new coach takes over.
Wallabies' Struggles Continue Under Schmidt
Australia's winless start to 2026 has been brutal. After leading 21-12 at half-time against France, they conceded 30 unanswered points to lose 42-26. The week prior, Ireland overturned a 24-19 deficit to win 33-31. These collapses have left the team shellshocked and fans reaching for the bottle.

Schmidt's tenure began promisingly with three straight wins in 2024, but he has since won just eight of 27 Tests. A loss to Italy would drop his win percentage below 36%, a terrible record for a team heading into a home World Cup in 14 months. Incoming coach Les Kiss faces a daunting rebuild.
Key Factors in the Italy Test
Italy have beaten Australia in their last two clashes (2022 and 2025), so the Wallabies are underdogs. The match in Perth is a last chance for Schmidt to salvage some pride before retiring. Here are the critical elements:
- Defensive lapses: Australia have blown halftime leads in consecutive games, showing mental fragility.
- Set-piece pressure: The scrum and lineout must improve to counter Italy's physical pack.
- Fan support: Home crowd in Perth could lift the team, but recent results have dampened enthusiasm.
Comparison of Wallabies Coaches Since 1995
| Coach | Wins | Losses | Win % |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eddie Jones (2023) | 2 | 9 | 18.2% |
| Joe Schmidt (2024-2026) | 8 | 19 | 29.6% |
| Michael Cheika (2014-2019) | 48 | 25 | 65.8% |
As the table shows, Schmidt's record is only better than Eddie Jones's disastrous 2023 campaign. The Wallabies need a fresh start under Les Kiss, but the road ahead is tough with away Tests in Japan and Argentina.
What's Next for Australian Rugby?
Les Kiss takes over after this Test, facing a brutal schedule. His first match is in Hokkaido against Japan, coached by Eddie Jones, who will be out for revenge. Then comes a home Test in Townsville before two away games in Argentina. The Wallabies must adapt quickly or risk further decline.
For now, all eyes are on Perth. A win against Italy would stop the rot and give fans hope. A loss would deepen the crisis and leave Schmidt's legacy in tatters.
