Transform your kitchen into a fresh herb haven with this clever DIY project. By recycling metal cutlery holders and mounting them on wooden panels, you can create stylish, space-saving planters for aromatic herbs. Not only do they keep your basil, mint, and rosemary within arm's reach while cooking, but they also add a rustic, personalized touch to your walls. Perfect for small kitchens or anyone looking to bring a bit of greenery indoors, this project is easy to tackle with basic tools and materials.

Materials You'll Need

  • 3 laminate parquet planks (15–18 cm wide, height to your preference)
  • L-shaped wooden molding (12×8 mm) for frames
  • Acrylic enamel paint (any color you like)
  • Vinyl glue
  • Plastic cable ties (often used for electrical wiring)
  • Picture hangers with small nails
  • Metal cutlery holders (like IKEA Ordning in stainless steel)
  • Small pots with aromatic herb plants

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare the Wooden Panels

Start by cutting the laminate planks to your desired height. Remove the male tongue (the interlocking edge) from each plank so you have a smooth surface. Then, cut the L-shaped molding into four pieces per panel, using a fine-tooth saw and a miter guide to achieve 45-degree angles at each corner. This will form the frame around each panel.

2. Assemble and Paint the Frames

Glue the four molding pieces together with vinyl glue, using tape or small clamps to hold them in place while the glue dries. Once hardened, paint the frames with acrylic enamel in a color that complements your laminate. Let them dry completely.

3. Attach the Frames to the Panels

Apply vinyl glue around the edge of each panel and press the frame onto it. Use clothespins or small clamps to secure the frame for at least 24 hours, ensuring a strong bond. If you need extra workspace, consider a sturdy desk or work surface to keep your project organized.

4. Drill Holes for the Cable Ties

Drill four holes in the center of each panel—two near the top and two near the bottom. These will allow the cable ties to pass through and secure the metal cutlery holder to the panel.

5. Attach the Cutlery Holders

Place the metal cutlery holder against the panel, aligning it with the drilled holes. Thread plastic cable ties through the holes and around the holder, then tighten them securely. Snip off any excess tie length.

6. Mount the Panels on the Wall

Attach a picture hanger to the back of each panel using small nails. Then, hang the panels on your kitchen wall at your preferred height. For a cohesive look, consider adding wall decor or a mirror nearby to brighten the space.

7. Add Your Herbs

Place small pots of aromatic herbs (like basil, parsley, or thyme) into the cutlery holders. The open design allows for easy watering and drainage. To keep your herbs thriving, position the planters near a sunny window or under a kitchen light.

Tips for Success

  • Choose the right herbs: Opt for compact varieties like dwarf basil, chives, or oregano that stay small and bushy.
  • Water wisely: Use pots with drainage holes and place a saucer inside the cutlery holder to catch excess water.
  • Customize the color: Match the frame paint to your kitchen cabinets or kitchen island for a seamless look.
  • Scale up: Make multiple panels to create a vertical herb garden. Pair them with shelving units for extra storage.

Tools Required

  • Fine-tooth saw
  • Drill
  • Clamps or clothespins
  • Paintbrushes
  • Miter guide for cutting frames

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use other types of metal containers?

Absolutely! Any metal cutlery holder or similar container with an open front will work. For a cohesive look, consider home improvement items that match your kitchen style.

How do I water the herbs without damaging the wall?

Use pots with drainage holes and place a small tray or saucer inside the metal holder. Water sparingly to avoid overflow. You can also line the holder with a plastic bag for extra protection.

What if I don't have a miter saw for the frames?

A fine-tooth hand saw and a miter box will work just as well. Alternatively, you can skip the frames entirely and simply paint the edges of the laminate panels for a simpler look.

Can I hang these planters outdoors?

Yes, but use weather-resistant materials like treated wood and stainless steel holders. For outdoor spaces, browse our outdoor decor and garden supplies for inspiration.

How do I clean the planters?

Remove the pots and wipe down the metal holder with a damp cloth. The wooden panels can be dusted or lightly cleaned with a wood-safe cleaner. For long-lasting durability, consider adding a rug or curtains to protect nearby surfaces from moisture.
