More and more often, clients ask us whether we perform pest control treatments using organic or natural products. The answer is yes. Just as frequently, they ask about the advantages and disadvantages of these types of products. In this article, we aim to highlight both and offer our recommendation on the ideal practice for repelling insects, whether flying or crawling.
Characteristics of Bio Pest Control
For several years now, we have been performing pest control treatments with natural products. Specifically, we use an insecticide based on natural pyrethrum with B.I.A. (Low Environmental Impact) technology and low residual activity.
This is a concentrated emulsion with rapid knockdown and flushing action that quickly proves effective against various species of crawling and flying insects. Among the most common: moths and beetles, tiger mosquitoes and common mosquitoes, sandflies, flies, wasps, and crawling insects such as ants and cockroaches.
Natural pyrethrum is carried by a glycolic solution (Low Environmental Impact Technology) that ensures greater safety during use and a lower environmental impact. The product contains no aromatic solvents and is not phytotoxic at the doses prescribed by good practice.
Ideal Environments for Bio Pest Control
This type of treatment is suitable for sensitive environments where residual action is not required or desired: storage or processing areas for raw food or feed materials, food industries (food warehouses, granaries, etc.), livestock environments (animal shelters, milking parlors), indoor and outdoor areas of civil environments (schools, canteens, tourist villages, campsites), commercial establishments (restaurants, hotels, shops, bars, etc.) and homes (walls, paths, thresholds and windowsills, sidewalks, etc.), on vegetation for mosquito treatment (lawns, avenues, hedges, parks), and means of transport.
Disadvantages of Bio Pest Control
Due to its characteristics, pest control based on natural pyrethrum does not boast any residual activity. What are the consequences? The main one is that the treatment will need to be repeated more frequently compared to one performed with high-residual products. Natural pyrethrum, in fact, has a high knockdown action, so it manages to eliminate insects present in the treated areas. However, it cannot guarantee that new insects, i.e., those coming from other areas, will not infest the treated spaces.
Bio Pest Control or Chemical Insecticide Pest Control?
The answer is difficult, as both types present interesting characteristics. In the most severe infestation cases, however, we recommend pest control with chemical products, thanks to the residual action that protects the treated site for about 2–3 weeks.
We recommend pest control with natural pyrethrum for sporadic infestations or in case of allergies. For persistent wildlife intruders like raccoons, you may want to explore best poison for raccoons for a more targeted approach.
When to Choose Natural Products
- You have children or pets who frequently use the treated area
- You or family members suffer from allergies or chemical sensitivities
- The infestation is light or sporadic
- You are treating food processing or storage areas
- You want to minimize environmental impact
When to Choose Chemical Products
- You are dealing with a severe, established infestation
- You need long-lasting protection (2–3 weeks or more)
- You are treating large commercial or industrial spaces
- Quick knockdown alone is not sufficient to break the pest life cycle
FAQ Section
1. Is natural pest control as effective as chemical pest control?
Natural pest control can be highly effective for immediate knockdown of insects, but it lacks the residual activity that chemical products provide. For ongoing protection, especially in severe infestations, chemical treatments may be more reliable.
2. How often should I apply natural pest control treatments?
Because natural products like pyrethrum have no residual effect, treatments typically need to be repeated more frequently—often every few days or weekly—depending on the pest pressure and environmental conditions.
3. Are natural pest control products safe for pets and children?
Yes, when used according to label directions, natural pyrethrum-based products are generally safer for pets and children than synthetic chemical insecticides. However, it is always wise to keep them away during application and until the spray has dried.
4. Can I use natural pest control for all types of pests?
Natural pyrethrum is effective against a wide range of flying and crawling insects, including mosquitoes, flies, ants, cockroaches, moths, and beetles. However, for larger pests like raccoons or rodents, you may need specialized products such as the best poison for raccoons.
5. What is the main drawback of bio pest control?
The main drawback is the lack of residual activity. This means that while the treatment kills insects present at the time of application, it does not prevent new insects from entering the treated area shortly after. More frequent applications are required to maintain control.
