Beluga Whales Exit Canadian Marine Park, Head to US Aquariums 2026

Beluga whales have finally left Marineland, the embattled Canadian marine park in Niagara Falls, and are arriving at US aquariums this week. The six whales’ journey marks the end of a long and controversial saga of captivity in Canada, but advocates warn that challenges remain despite improved conditions.

The Long Road to Relocation

Marineland operated from the early 1960s until it effectively closed to visitors in 2024. It once held one of the largest captive whale populations in the world, but it was plagued by reports of poor conditions. Since 2019, 20 whales—19 belugas and one orca—have died at the park, according to documents compiled by the Canadian Press.

The park’s decline accelerated due to dwindling visitors, bad press, and a 2019 federal law banning the sale, captivity, and breeding of dolphins and whales. That law led to a feud between Marineland, the Canadian government, and activists. The government blocked a planned transfer of whales to a theme park in China over concerns about animal treatment.

In October 2025, Marineland threatened to euthanize its 30 belugas if the federal government did not provide financial support. Last month, Canada and Marineland reached a deal to rehome the belugas to a consortium of US aquariums in Georgia, Chicago, San Diego, and San Antonio, along with the Oceanogràfic in Spain.

What Advocates Say

Phil Demers, a former Marineland trainer who became an outspoken critic, said, “There’s obviously some relief, but it’s hard for me to frankly endorse any of the facilities that these animals are going to.” He is hopeful that US parks have more stringent oversight but added, “I’m happy for the animals. I just know that the fight for their improved existence will probably last their entire lifetimes.”

Key Takeaways

• Six beluga whales have been successfully relocated from Marineland to US aquariums.
• The park’s closure followed years of controversy, deaths, and legislative changes.
• US facilities are subject to stricter oversight but still face criticism from activists.
• The deal averts the threatened euthanasia of the remaining whales.

FAQ

The relocation of these beluga whales ends a dramatic chapter in Canadian marine park history, but advocates caution that their welfare must continue to be monitored. As Demers noted, the fight for improved existence will likely last their entire lifetimes.
