The Singer Review: KT Tunstall's Glowing Gig Theatre 2026

The Singer review: KT Tunstall's gig theatre brings a unique blend of music and sign language to the stage, offering a glowing and immersive experience that challenges conventional listening. Directed by Cora Bissett, this production, staged by Dundee Rep and Solar Bear, tells a simple yet profound story of friendship, disability, and the power of sound.

A Story of Friendship and Music

At the heart of The Singer is the unlikely partnership between Joe (Jamie Rea), a BSL user who experiences music through vibration, and Andy (Dylan Wood), a busker with a raw talent. Their connection forms the basis of a narrative that explores the music industry's exploitative nature while celebrating the inclusive potential of sound.

The plot follows Andy's rise from faithful friend to fickle star and back again, but the real strength lies in its subtle commentary on the exclusion of d/Deaf people and the lower status of BSL culture. The production wears its politics lightly but unmistakably, ensuring that written, spoken, and signed languages are always available on Jenny Booth's clever set.

KT Tunstall's Score and the Gig Theatre Experience

KT Tunstall's indie folk rock score adds an authentic edge, complemented by Joe's beats under the musical direction of Michael John McCarthy. The gig theatre format breaks the fourth wall, inviting the audience to participate in signing the chorus of Find My Feet, a feelgood moment that unites everyone in the room.

The production cleverly demonstrates that music isn't just heard—it's felt. Joe's use of a Subpac and his hand-on-guitar demonstrations show how sound can be experienced beyond the auditory. This is a powerful message that resonates long after the final note.

Why This Review Matters

This production is a testament to the power of inclusive art. By placing a d/Deaf character at the center, The Singer not only entertains but educates, breaking down barriers between hearing and non-hearing audiences. The chemistry between Rea and Wood is palpable, and the supporting cast, including Hannah Jarrett-Scott and Peter Dobre as Andy's grandparents, adds depth and humor.

If you're looking for a theatre experience that feels both intimate and revolutionary, The Singer is a must-see. It's a glowing example of how music can transcend disability, creating a shared space where everyone can feel the noise.
