Western Bulldogs Win Wildcard Final as Collingwood Misses Siren 2026

The Western Bulldogs secured a dramatic three-point victory in the first AFL wildcard final, defeating Collingwood at the MCG in a thriller that ended with Tim Membrey's missed shot after the siren. The Bulldogs' 14.12 (96) to 14.9 (93) win before 81,036 fans sealed their spot in the elimination final, while Collingwood's season ended in heartbreak.

Match Summary: A Nail-Biter at the MCG

The game was a see-sawing contest with four lead changes in the frenetic final minutes. Arty Jones snapped his fourth goal to put the Bulldogs back in front, while Aaron Naughton and Collingwood's Dan McStay each kicked four goals. The match featured five lead changes in the first quarter alone, as both teams traded blows in a high-intensity encounter.

Key Performances

Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli and Collingwood's Brownlow Medal favourite Nick Daicos both delivered standout performances through the midfield, living up to their marquee status. However, it was the Bulldogs' resilience that proved decisive, as they rallied after leading by 21 points in the third term.

Collingwood's Tim Membrey marked strongly and had a shot at goal on the final siren, but his effort faded to the right, sealing the Bulldogs' win. It was a cruel end for the Magpies, who had fought back repeatedly throughout the game.

Injury Concerns and Farewells

Bulldogs midfielder Matt Kennedy, one of their best players, was forced off in the last quarter with a head knock and is likely to miss next week's elimination final. For Collingwood, the loss marked the final game for veteran Steele Sidebottom, who had announced his retirement at the end of the season.

Statistical Comparison: Bulldogs vs. Magpies

The three-point margin was the closest in any AFL final this season, highlighting the parity between the two sides. The Bulldogs' ability to convert under pressure was key, as they butchered several scoring opportunities but still managed to hold on.

The Bulldogs will now face a tough elimination final, with Matt Kennedy's availability a major concern. They will need to regroup quickly and address their scoring efficiency to advance further. The win, however, provides a significant morale boost for a team that has shown resilience all season.
