Un enfant du dieu nordique Loki, Jormungandr, le « Midgard » ou Serpent du Monde, est le plus grand ouroboros. Encerclant l'océan qui entoure le monde ; si le « monstre énorme » lâchait sa propre queue, le monde serait à sa fin. Le corps du serpent est gravé de runes à l'avant indiquant « Jormungandr Miogarosormr », ce qui se traduit par « Jormundgard le Serpent du Monde ». Dans la mythologie nordique, Jormungandr, également connu sous le nom de Serpent de Midgard ou Serpent du Monde, est un serpent de mer, l'enfant du milieu de la géante Angrbooa et de Loki. Selon la Prose Edda, Odin prit les trois enfants de Loki avec Angrbooa - le loup Fenrir, Hel et Jormungandr - et jeta Jormungandr dans le grand océan qui entoure Midgard.
