Build a Simple Plywood Floating Shelf we will teach you how to build a floating shelf that is 9 feet tall and 3 feet tall. Provides plenty of storage space for decorations and books or other utensils.
We will need:
- A sheet of 4/8″ plywood, 3/4 thick
- Kreg pocket screws
- A cloth
- Wood glue
- Natural wood filler
- Minwax Clear Spray
- French tacos
Tools:
- Circular Closing
- Kreg Rip-Cut Tool
- Square
- Orbital Sander
- Kreg Pocket-Hole Tool
- Clamps
- Spray shelter
- Husky 1/4″ and 3/8″ Universal Mechanics Tool Set
- Milwakee
Step 1: Cut the plywood

It was cut (4) 3′ long and the other at (4) 4′ by 1′ long (See Photos). We used a circular Rip-Cut tool to keep the cuts nice and straight. Then we cut (9) 12″ x 12″ squares. Six of these are the sides of the cubes and the other three are the backs.
After all the pieces were cut, they were sanded with 120 and 220 grit sandpaper.
Step 2: Create pocket holes

The pocket holes were made in the (9) 12″ x 12″ squares. Each of the six squares that make up the cubes has six pocket holes and the backrests have one on each side of the square. The six squares were glued and screwed into the 3′ boards. All the pieces were placed on the floor creating a cube. This gap was measured so it was a 12″ square, clamped, and then everything was screwed into place. The exposed pocket holes were filled with natural colored wood putty.
Join the back parts of the cube in place.
Step 3: Spraying

We wanted a natural look, so we finished the shelf with a couple of coats of Minwax clear lacquer. We are using a spray shelter to contain any overspray.
Step 4: Prepare the space

Before we could hang the shelf, we had to remove the shelving from the room, repair the damage to the wall, and repaint.
Step 5: Attach French Cleats and Hang

We are using French cleats to hang the shelves. This is our go-to method for hanging heavy items on the wall. We have used many of them and have never had a mistake. Each French cleat has two parts, one goes on the object and the other on the wall. We placed our dowels on the back of each of the three cube sections. It took some trial and error to make sure all the studs were seated properly. We actually used a Milwaukee inspection camera to look behind the rack to see what was going on. On our first try, we found that the middle was a correct one but the otwo others no.
Step 6: Done

The best part is designing the shelf. We designed it as if you had it in a living room or bedroom with decorations and books. There is plenty of space to store all kinds of accessories or toys.
