Candle Holders for Small Candles 2026

Today we will teach you how to make a candle holder for small candles easily and simply with this article.

We have a bunch of tea light candles left over from our wedding, but they burn out quickly and it's a pain to dig out new ones. So we created this layout to display them but also stock them so it's easy to fill.

We've broken this project down into gifs to give you a quick look at how we did it. We screwed up a few times (haha, okay a lot) and had a few tips along the way, so if you want that extra content, check out our video above.

• 1×12 wood (we use pine)
• Thin brass rods (or aluminum rods, or copper rods, etc.)
• Drill
• Drilling guide
• Table saw
• Miter saw
• Band saw
• Digital calipers (optional)
• Random orbit sander (optionally you can sand by hand)
• Belt sander (optional, you can sand by hand)
• Dremel tool
• Chisels
• Clamps
• Wood putty
• Protractor (optional)
• Shellac
• Wood glue

Step 1: Cut to Length

First we took some 1x12 pine and cut it to size on our miter saw (we made 6″, 8″ and 10″) for each chandelier height. We used premium pine, so it required a little less finishing, but it's still pretty cheap.

Step 2: Cut segments

The main body is made of 6 segments cut at a 30 degree angle on both sides. At first we used a miter gauge to push the wood through our table saw, using one cut as a spacer to get a consistent width (which was removed before cutting). However, this didn't work once the piece we were cutting started to get smaller, so we ended up using a sled (we get into it more in the video).

Next we did a test fit. At this point, everything seemed fine, although we noticed that the pieces thinned out a bit... More on that later.

Step 3: Sanding and gluing

We sanded all the pieces individually, making sure not to round the corners and edges (we wanted them to be flush). We did some of this by hand and some with a random orbit sander. Then we used painters tape to not only hold everything in place, but also for the glue (we used wood glue). It's a great way to keep pieces together in situations where clamps may not make sense.

Speaking of glues, this one was particularly satisfying... Although we may have used an excessive amount of glue.

Step 4: Making the Base

We traced the candle holder onto the scrap 1x12 to cut out as a base. At first we tried cutting the base on the band saw, but it was difficult to be super precise, so we moved to the table saw to get precise, clean edges. We glue the base with our favorite tweezers.

Step 5: Cutting the angle (optional)

It would have made sense to cut this angle before gluing the base for sanding purposes, so we did it for last (the first one where we glued the base before cutting the angle, which was doable, but harder to sand).

This step is optional:We made it because we think it looks cool and makes it easier to grab the candles from the storage area. We did this by marking the angle with a protractor and very carefully following the cut on our band saw, making sure to go slowly and not overcut.

Step 6: Brass rods

To support the upper sail, we use brass rods. In a previous version of this project, we tried cutting a small hexagon that fit perfectly inside the top of the candlestick, but the brass rods are much easier and we think they are a nice aesthetic detail.

We cut two pieces of brass per candle a little longer than necessary to make them with metal scissors. Then we sanded them on our belt sander little by little until they reached the perfect length.

Next, we used our drill guide to carefully drill through the sides of the chandelier (we used our digital calipers to measure the diameter of the rods and choose the correct drill bit size). We inserted the brass rods through the holes and carefully hammered them into place with our mallet.

Step 7: Finishing

Shellac is our favorite finish, because it's pretty easy. When dry, it raises the grain slightly, so we sand it with 600 grit sandpaper very lightly between coats.
