If you like innovative ideas, then this DIY project how to make an insect-shaped light bulb is for you.
I'm guessing most people will have a dead, broken light bulb lying around, and this project can use any shape of light bulb...
In fact, the shape will certainly give you inspiration for the type of creature you want to create.

Step by step to make an Insect-shaped light bulb
#1: Gather Supplies

Very little is needed for this project, depending on how adventurous you are with it.
You will need:
- A light bulb
- Wire; I used 1.5mm black aluminum wire which is cheap and easy to shape
- Wire cutters
- Round nose pliers; I used my set of jewelry pliers
- A plan; Of course, you can follow my plan or you can make a design completely your own, but it's important to have the design in mind before you start.
#2: First pair of legs

- First stretch the cable between your fingers before using it. It is very easy to do this with aluminum craft wire, but if you are using a different type of wire, it is best to use pliers to help you.
- Then, wrap a piece of wire around the metal section of the bulb.
- Wrap it once, and then again, so that the "legs" stick out in the same direction. If you wrap around enough and push the wire into the slots, you should not add glue in this project.
- The length of cable you use depends on the length of leg you want, but the straight "legs" on mine were about 6″ long each.
- Then follow the photos to bend the wire back towards the glass bulb so they are horizontal and then bend the legs down.
- Not straight down, but tilted back a little for stability.
- Then you can use your round nose pliers to make a spiral around the ends of the legs.
#3: The second pair of legs

- Then repeat the previous step where you wrap the wire around the metal slots to form two more "legs."
- The length of the cable should be the same as what you used for the first pair of legs.
- These legs, however, will bend outward and forward, before bending downward.
- Then add the little spiral legs 🙂
- At this point you will need to place the bug on a flat surface to ensure it balances on all 4 legs.
- If it doesn't, you will have to reposition the cables until it does.
#4: Spiral sensors

You like my spirals, don't you?
- For the last step, I once again wrapped a section of wire around the metal part of the bulb.
- I had to wrap this cable over another cable because I ran out of slots to use.
- This wire used for this section can be a little shorter than the legs, and then simply use the pliers to make a large forward-facing spiral.
- Check that these do not unbalance your critter, and if they do, you will need to put the front legs further forward or the "feelers" further back.
#5: Finished!

- And that's it, you're done!
Of course, there are all kinds of variations you can do, including:
- Using different thicknesses and colors of wire.
- Base the design on a different type of insect or create your own mythical creature
- Addition of paint, beads, paper or fabric... Or other decorations.
- Adding wings.
- Making it from weatherproof materials, tying it to a thick wire 'stake' and putting it in a flower pot/planter
- Make a flying insect and hang it from the ceiling.
- Add LED to make the bulb shine.
