Simple DIY Technique to Imitate Brick Walls, see how easy it is to have a fake brick wall, the porosity can make it uneven and look more like a real brick.
In addition, almost no color is used in this technique. And it doesn't work!
Supplies and tools needed:
- You will need Joint Compound, a 4.5 gallon container costs about $25 on Amazon, Ebay, Home Depot or Sodimac.
- Matching tape to make the seam lines, 1/2 inch looks better but is hard to find... I buy the 1 inch tape and cut it with a razor blade.
- One level
- Pencil
- Carpenter's Marker
- Putty knives of different sizes
- Tape measure.
- 1 Brick to use as a template
- Brick color latex interior wall paint, light gray wall paint, (can use white) and black paint.
- 80 grit sandpaper
- Paintbrush, floor cloth, water and rags

Step 1: Getting the Brick Look

- Using the brick as a pattern, place it on the floor and use it to draw a line on the wall. Every few feet use the brick to draw a line on the wall. Use the straight edge level to connect the lines across the area.
- Using the 1/2 inch tape, apply it directly to the wall just above the line… This is now your grout line.
- Using the brick now repeat that step for the next row of bricks… I keep repeating this until all the “rows” are done.
- Now using the brick place it on the ground and draw a side line, this is the layout of the brick
- Start using the tape vertically... Repeat this step all the way... you will now have a "row" of bricks placed with the tape.
- Now start the second row by starting the first brick in the center of the first… This will give you the alternating pattern.
- Just repeat until you have the section covered with tape!
Step 2: Applying the Compound

Not much of this, if you want to put it on about 1/2 inch thick try not to cover all the tape as you will have to peel it off. I kind of just put it on and smoothed it over the area.
Be sure to peel off the tape BEFORE the compound dries... Or you won't be able to get it off! Work in small sections at a time…
If you press your finger on the tape, you can peel the tape back to where you are pushing and it will break...
Step 3: Build a few bricks

After the bricks have dried... About 24 hours, I'll glue down some bricks and apply another coat of compound, just to create some and help get the look.
Step 4: Finish Your Brick Look

- I use the putty knife to knock down some of the sharp edges, you can also knock some down with some sandpaper.
- For smaller brick sections, I use more compound to build up the surrounding areas of the brick to make it look as if the stucco has come away exposing the brick.
Step 5: Paint

- Using the flat brick colored paint I brush it on each brick... For large sections you can also use a thick roller and just roll it.
- In a small container, I use the color of the brick and add a little black... Just enough to change the color... Then I paint random bricks in different shades.
- On the darker bricks, after it dries, I go with a dry brush of the light-colored paint. It gives more that aged-looking tone.
Step 6: Finish

All grout lines were hand painted a light gray... Have a wet rag handy to clean up the paint you'll get on the brick!
I “clean” some with a wet cloth… This wash effect really looks like a real brick. Finally, the outer edges of the stucco are painted the same color as the wall.
This can really change the look of a room!
