Floating Table Made of Acrylic W/Floating Mahogany Drawer, the drawer is constructed of Mahogany and features miters reinforced with maple chips. The drawer then appears to "float" inside the box.

Step 1: Cut the acrylic to size

I started with a 4′ by 4′ sheet of 3/4″ acrylic. I found this at a local plastic supply. For the drawer you will need about 160″ of some type of 4/4 hardwood at least 5 1/2″ wide. I chose Mahogany, and it was a very good choice. The combination of acrylic and mahogany really beautiful. For construction!

• You need a special saw blade to cut acrylic precisely. I used this one. It is an 80-tooth triple sliver blade made specifically for cutting plastics.
• Set the table saw fence at 16 inches and rip (2) 4′ by 16″ sections. The material is heavy and bulky. Take your time and let the blade do the work. My first cut lasted almost 5 minutes.
• The box is approximately 24 inches wide. Find the center of a 4-foot, 16-inch-wide section and cut it in half. A table saw sled is a very good idea for this cut.
• From the second 4 foot 16 inch plank cut (2) to 4 3/4 inches.
• From one of the 4 3/4-inch-wide boards, mark the 16-inch width with the top or bottom piece to get the exact depth. It may not be exactly 16 inches. Now make a cross cut with a cross cut sled.
• Cut the second 16-inch side piece using the same method. Now do a dry fit of the box and measure the length needed for the back piece. (See photos for details) Step into this cut for the perfect fit.
• The base structure is made of 4 apron pieces and 4 legs. Remove the acrylic on the left from the 4 3/4-inch cuts into 2-inch wide strips. Remove the remainder of the original 4-foot-long panel to 2 inches. From these pieces you will cut all the legs and aprons.
• Cross-cut (6) pieces from 2 inches wide to 17 inches long. This will cover all 4 legs and the front and back. Cross cut (2) of the pieces from 2 inches wide to 13 inches. These will be the side aprons.

Step 2: Angled cuts for the base

All angled pieces on this board are 9 degrees. You can change the angle slightly if you like, but for some reason I'm drawn to 9 degree angles. I also used a 9 degree angle for the construction of the plywood table. (Seen here)

• A digital angle gauge like this works well to adjust the saw blade correctly. Set the saw blade at 9 degrees and rip a 9-degree bevel on the two 13-inch aprons. This will allow it to match the angle of the legs they will rest on. This provides more structure to support the case.
• Set your miter gauge to 9 degrees. For all four legs, cut 9-degree angles facing the same direction (a parallelogram). final length should be 16 1/2 inches.
• Now cut opposite 9 degree angles on the front and back apron pieces. (a trapezoid)

Step 3: Sanding and assembling the table

Now it's time to sand all the edges. A lot of projects you'll see online use flame polishing. It's a great and quick technique, but it's not ideal for this project. The reason is that you have a wooden drawer and there is probably sawdust floating around your workshop, acrylic has a lot of static electricity. It will attract all the dust. You'll want to clean it with denatured alcohol, which also helps eliminate static. If you spray it with denatured alcohol with cracks on the edges. (Breaks).

• Sand all edges first with 600 grit and then with 1200 grit.
• To assemble we will start with the capital letter. I used a CA acrylic glue that was provided by the plastic supply I purchased my material from. Because of this, I don't know the brand. Instead, I will provide this link for a popular adhesive that "welds" the acrylic at the same time. There is a whole trick to applying the adhesive. Prepare your pieces however you want. I started with the back and a side piece of the case as shown in the photos. Using your applicator bottle, squeeze most of the air out of the bottle. Tilt the bottle up while releasing pressure on it. This will cause air to flow back into the bottle and prevent the adhesive from coming out.
• Place the tip of the needle next to the joint you are gluing and begin to squeeze the adhesive into the joint. It will flow into the joint. Practice on some test pieces first.
• Now assemble the rest of the box in the same way. Be sure to take your time with each joint. Allow 5 to 10 minutes to allow the adhesive to set before attempting to handle a piece. I attached the other side piece below.
• You will now have the U-shaped side structure of the case. Put it in a top or bottom box. Once aligned, attach with adhesive. Repeat for the other box piece making sure to allow setting time. Now the case must be all together.
• It's time to assemble the legs. There is a front and rear leg assembly which consists of the front or rear apron and two legs. Place one leg on the platform so that the angles match where the leg extends outward. (Top photo) Use a scrap piece to support the other end of the leg.
• Place the other leg in the same way so that it projects outwards.
• Build two identical leg assemblies.
• You're getting closer now! Clamp a trim cut to the front of the box so the leg assembly inserts 3/4 inch. Use a square to insert the legs 3 1/2 inches from each side. Position the two side aprons to match the 9-degree angle of the legs. Place it on the rear leg assembly and use the square to check the alignment 3 1/2 inches from the side.
• Work your way along the bottom of the box applying adhesive everywhere where acrylic meets acrylic.

Step 4: Make the drawer

Now you have the table assembled, and it's time to move on to building the drawer.

• Measure the opening of the box to obtain its exact dimensions.
• Start by cutting the wood to an approximate length. 3 to 23″ for the bottom of the drawer. 2 to 23″ for the front and back of the drawer. 2 to 16 inches for drawer sides.
• Join one edge and one face of all these boards.
• Plane everything to a thickness of 3/4 inch. (I had to go a little less to get everything even. This is fine too)
• Remove the bottom three drawer boards to 5 1/4 inches, referencing the hinged edge of the saw fence.
• Assemble the bottom of the drawer. Glue, secure and set aside.
• On the front, back, and sides of the drawer, it is cut on a 45-degree bevel along the length, removing as little material as possible.
• Using the width of the case, rip these boards to fit the height of the case. They will be approximately 4 3/4 inches, but measure and get close to this dimension. I would cut, check, cut more, check again, and eventually landed on a perfect fit.
• Sand everything, use 220 grit.
• Now it's time to cut the 45 degree miter joint. Again, it's a very good idea to sneak up on these cuts. Plus, using a good miter gauge makes this a much safer process. Cut on a 45-degree miter on one edge, making sure to orient the cut in the correct direction.
• Remove as little material as possible to make the cut.
• Now for the rest of these cuts, you will use the case to find the correct length. Sneak up on these cuts again and try adjusting them on the box as shown in the images above.
• Place the drawer front, sides and back in order of joining. Flip it over so the miters are face down. Apply masking tape to the joints making sure everything is flush and in line. Turn the entire contraption over and apply glue to all the joints. Fold each drawer piece together. Use a band clamp to secure the drawer.
• Once the bottom of the drawer is dry, you will need to cut the 45 degree bevels all the way around. Cut these to match the dimensions of the drawer you assembled. Glue on the bottom of the drawer.
• Once this is dry you will need to reinforce all of these miter joints. Once dry, cut all grooves, sand smooth.
• Finish with your choice of finish. I used two coats of cleaning.

Step 5: Everything is ready!
