Rose Tremain's Extra Geography has been adapted into a new British film, exploring the intense romances of early friendships. Set in a 1950s boarding school, the semi-autobiographical short story first published in 2007 has been brought to the screen by playwright and Succession scriptwriter Miriam Battye. The film captures the profound emotional connections formed during adolescence, resonating with modern audiences.
The Journey from Page to Screen
Tremain, speaking from her home in Norfolk, expressed delight with the adaptation. She had previously been disappointed with the film version of her novel Restoration, calling it "a dog's dinner." However, Extra Geography exceeded her expectations. "I've been delighted by this whole project," she says. Tremain praises Battye's script for understanding the essence of the story while making it her own. "She completely understood it and yet made it her own, which, honestly... In cinema, I don't know how often that happens."

Modern Relevance of a 1950s Story
Battye believed the story could easily transfer to the modern day, and Tremain agreed. "It's not just a little relic from my past. It has relevance now," Tremain notes. The themes of teenage love and friendship are timeless, and the film's setting in a boarding school in the north of England adds a layer of nostalgia and authenticity.
