Tourette Syndrome Campaigner John Davidson to Attend Bafta Scotland 2026

Tourette syndrome campaigner John Davidson will attend the Bafta Scotland awards and watch the ceremony from a separate "relaxed" space, following an independent review into his previous experience at the British Academy film awards in February. The move comes after Davidson's outburst at the national Bafta film awards led to a crisis for both Bafta and the BBC.

In a letter sent to Bafta members on Thursday, chair Sara Putt and CEO Jane Millichip said that Bafta had "strengthened and centralised our safeguarding, risk assessment and compliance processes" after the review. They also confirmed that arrangements had been made in consultation with "safeguarding and inclusion experts" for Davidson's attendance at the Bafta Scotland awards ceremony, which is due to take place in November.

Bafta Scotland Awards: A Relaxed Viewing Space for Davidson

For the Bafta Scotland awards ceremony, Bafta says that, in accordance with Davidson's own suggestion, he will "watch the ceremony via video link from a separate relaxed space within the venue with his family and friends". This arrangement aims to provide a comfortable and supportive environment for Davidson while still allowing him to participate in the event.

The decision reflects a growing awareness of the need for inclusive practices at major awards ceremonies. Bafta's proactive approach in consulting with experts and implementing a relaxed space demonstrates a commitment to accessibility and safeguarding.

I Swear: Leading Contender at Bafta Scotland Awards

I Swear, the film based on Davidson's life, is the leading contender with seven nominations at the Bafta Scotland awards. The film has secured all three nominations in the best film actor category, for Peter Mullan, Robert Aramayo, and Scott Ellis Watson, as well as a best film actress nomination for Shirley Henderson. Aramayo unexpectedly won best actor at the national Bafta film awards in February.

As executive producer of I Swear, Davidson had been in attendance at the national Bafta film awards when the incident occurred. The film's success at the Bafta Scotland awards would be a significant achievement for Davidson and the entire team.
