White House Removes CNN from Press Pool for Second Time 2026

The White House has removed CNN from the press pool for the second time in a week, escalating tensions between the Trump administration and major news networks. This move comes despite a federal judge's ruling overturning the ban on CNN and other media outlets.

White House Removes CNN from Press Pool Again

For the second time in a week, the White House has unilaterally removed CNN from its assignment as the primary television pool representative covering President Donald Trump. CNN was excluded on Saturday from pool duty aboard Air Force One, despite a district judge's ruling two days earlier that overturned the White House's ban on the network and two other media organizations.

On Sunday, in what appeared to be a thawing of tensions, the White House published a pool assignment list that listed CNN as in-town pooler for Thursday's activities, with the conservative network Real America's Voice serving as secondary pooler. However, on Wednesday night, the White House abruptly removed CNN from pool duty for the following day, leaving Real America's Voice as the only pooler as the president travels to Texas and Oklahoma.

Impact on Press Freedom and Media Coverage

The removal of CNN from the press pool raises significant concerns about press freedom and the White House's adherence to judicial rulings. The country's largest broadcast and cable television news networks have not aired Real America's Voice footage, though the network has widely broadcast its availability.

The five networks that serve in the primary television pool have taken it day by day since the White House originally banned CNN on September 18, initially suspending operation before tentatively kicking back into action this past Friday. As they did on Saturday, none of the other four networks will take CNN's place on Thursday, meaning there will be no primary pool footage, though networks could cover individual events separately.

Key Takeaways

• CNN has been removed from the White House press pool twice in one week.
• The removal defies a federal judge's ruling overturning the ban.
• Other networks are refusing to replace CNN, leading to reduced pool coverage.
• Press freedom advocates are alarmed by the administration's actions.

Reactions from Media and Legal Experts

Media analysts suggest that the White House's repeated removal of CNN from the press pool is a direct challenge to judicial authority and a blow to press freedom. The administration has not provided a clear explanation for the removal, further fueling speculation about its motives.

Legal experts note that the judge's ruling explicitly barred the White House from enforcing the ban, making the latest removal a potential violation of the court order. CNN has not yet announced whether it will take further legal action.
