How to Make a Cute Wooden Dollhouse is a dollhouse for a birthday gift. The design used for this project is from Google "Dollhouse Bookcase", only a couple of photos were taken to reconstruct the model of the furniture. Step 1: Know your space
As a friend told me, know what your final product will look like before you buy your materials.
We start by measuring the space where we will place the shelf. We calculated a width and height that would fit very well. Take the entire height and divide evenly to make 4 shelves keeping in mind that we needed 3/4 inch per shelf for the thickness of our wood. We chose to make the shelf out of plywood. We made the base out of a thicker, heavier wood that would keep the platform from tipping over. 8/4 maple or hard maple wood was used for the base.
Step 2: Sketch
The size of your shelf can vary to your liking.
Step 3: Materials
Materials
- 1 – 3/4 inch sheet of birch plywood. Since you are going to paint the wood, it doesn't have to be perfect.
- 1 – 4/4 8′ long by 2 inches wide, Hard Maple. This is used to cover the edges of the plywood.
- 1- 8/4 6′ long by 3 inches wide, Hard Maple
- Wood paint
- Mouldings
Step 4: Cut List
Cut the plywood sheets. You can use any saw or a table saw.
- Back of shelf – 48″ x 36 1/4″
- 4 Shelves – 36 1/4″ x 12″
- 1 Top of Shelf – 38″ x 12 3/4″
- Top – 2 pieces at 23 1/2″ x 11 1/2″, and 1 piece at 40 1/2″ x 11 1/2″
- Cut the moldings at an angle around the corners at the top.
- Hard maple base – 2 pieces 3″ wide x 14″ long, 1 piece 3″ wide x 41 1/4″ long, 1 piece 3″ wide x 12 inches long.
- Shelf dividers – 11 1/4″ high x 12″ deep
- Ornaments. This is to hide the face of the plywood on the shelf. You can choose a setting that is as thick as you like.
Step 5: Tools
- Table Saw (Kreg Jig)
- Screw Selector Wheel
- Drill
- Wood glue
- Nail gun
- Paint brush
- Nails and screws
Step 6: Assembly
Once all the cuts are made, assemble on the floor to see if it is the correct taste.
Step 7: Pocket Holes
Once you cut all the pieces, create pocket holes for the base and shelves. Here are a couple of pictures of the back of the shelf, and the bottom.
Step 8: Broad Base
You'll want a wide base on this shelf. This will make the shelf more stable in case your child decides to climb on it or pull on it. I always suggest anchoring to your walls too. Maple wood was used for the base. Then glue and screw the base to the bottom of the shelf.
Step 9: Shelves
You can use plugs to cover theholes made in the previous step.
Step 10: Trimming
Once I had all the pocket holes in place I put the shelves together. We also trimmed the top of the shelf with a 3 3/8″ edge. I suggest hard maple because children can be rough on their furniture.
Step 11: Garnish
It is very difficult to get the fit right. My suggestion is to cut the piece you need and leave the back straight. Leave a couple of inches hanging off the back, and then simply trim with a hand saw.
Step 12: Dividers
To give the shelves extra dimension and space them out better, we created walls. Here are some photos of the walls that were done. Cut doors and windows using a jigsaw. A pair of 2″ hinges were then used to open and close the doors. If you do this, cut an extra 1/2 off the bottom of the door. It will save you a lot of time sanding.
Step 13: Removable Highest Point
This part is a little tricky and you may have to make a couple of cuts to get it right. Cut the edges of the board at a 30-degree angle. If you make a mistake (I'm sure), just add extra embellishments. Felt pads are used on the bottom of the removable to prevent scratches.
