How to Make a Tire Swing, on any surface, a simple tire with a rope seems to be a good tire change. After all, it worked for us when we were kids. But these days, simply tying a rope to a tire isn't good enough. For purchased sets, the tires are now mounted horizontally instead of vertically, and that presents a whole set of its own challenges.

Step 1: Choose a tire!

First, choose a tire. Thinking “Bigger is better” will only get you into trouble here. Without being indecisive, consider the size of the derrieres that will be mounted on the swing.

For younger children, a big tire simply won't cut it. For large adults, a smaller tire should be fine, as long as it is larger (the tire, not the rear one) than the one on your wheelbarrow!

I was looking at a truck tire, but realized our 2 1/2 year old twins wouldn't go near it.

So, I settled for the tire I had just removed from the 15″ rear wheel of my motorcycle. Perfect!

Step 2: Install the Eye Bolts (Part 1)

Next, turn the tire over so that it is face up. This is where we are going to place the eye bolts that will attach to the chains that will support the rolling of the tire.

Since a triangle is the most stable plane, you will want to find three points, equidistant around the side wall, for each eye.

You can use all kinds of geometric formulas to determine ideal points. I simply picked an arbitrary spot for my first hole.

I went ahead and drilled it with a drill bit just big enough for the axis of the eye. I put it in a place where the fender washer will not protrude beyond the camber of the tire.

Step 3: Install the Eye Bolts (Part 2)

Then take a string and approximate where the second hole would be, then use the string to see if the third hole would be the same distance from the first two.

Seeing that this was not the case, I adjusted the rope and tried again. This process took three tries before reaching the perfect distance. I drilled the other two holes. Next, I threaded the eye bolts with a nut and fender washer.

Then I threaded the eye through the tire. On the inside of the tire, I placed another fender washer on the eye bolt, then the lock washer, and finally the second nut, which I tightened.

Step 4: Install the Eye Bolts (Part 3)

The sidewall of the tire is being squeezed between the two large washers of the flat fender. This prevents the smaller nut from dragging through the side wall as it is stressed by the weight of the person swinging.

Step 5: Attach the S-Hook (Part 1)

Next, take an S hook and thread it through the eye bolt.

Step 6: Attach the S-hook (part 2)

Using a pair of large Vice Grip brand pliers, squeeze the side of the s hook so that it closes around the bolt.

This requires several compressions of the Vice Grips for this to happen. Set the stem shackles quite wide and tighten them, closing the S-hook a little.

Open the jaws and adjust the adjustment bolt, making them a little smaller, and tighten them again, closing the s-hook a little more.

Repeat this process, making the counter-grips smaller each time, until the S-hook is completely closed aroundof the eye bolt.

Remember this process, because you will need to do it on all s-hook attachments.

Step 7: Install the Eye Bolts (Part 4)

Speaking of doing it again, do it again for the second hook on the second eye and for the third on the third eye.

Step 8: Attach the chains

Now that the S-hooks are attached to the eye bolts, it's time to attach each of the 3′ chains to each of the attached s-hooks.

Step 9: Attach the Top S Hook

Next, take the 4th S hook and place the ends of the 3 chains on it, hold it with the pliers just like the first three.

Step 10: Top Fixing Equipment

Now, there are three pieces of equipment, to place on top of this last S-hook, that will complete the tire swing portion of the project. From the image of them, their purpose should be obvious, once you see them.

The ratchet is pictured for size reference. Going from left to right is the order in which the items will be attached to the S-hook. First is the swivel.

This will allow the tire spindle to spin freely. The second piece is the connector link between the swivel and the clip hook.

The Clip Hook is in the sequence so that the height of the tire swivel is adjustable to the hanging chain. If you don't want/need it adjustable, please use the link to connect it to the hanging chain or use another hook on itself.

The s-hooks came in packs of two, so I had 4 of them, using 3 on the tire and 1 on the top of the chains. Instead of getting another two-pack of S-hooks, I got the Link Connector (I didn't want the leftover parts!).

Step 11: Twist the S Hook

Step 12: Upper connection equipment (2)

Here is a photo with the clip hook connected to the Link Connector connected to the turnbuckle connected to the s-hook connected to the chain. Tighten down/up the screw lock on the Link Connector, and the tire swing is now ready to be hung.
