How to make holes in metal correctly, usually in DIY jobs it is normal to have to drill walls, wood and metals, among other common materials. Drilling metal is by far more difficult than drilling wood or walls. Advance planning and taking certain precautions is necessary. We are going to give you some guides or tricks to make your work easier.

Recommendations:
- Safety: We will always wear safety glasses, as a metal shaving in our eyes could cause irreversible damage. It is also advisable to use gloves, since metal pieces usually have burrs that cut.
- Tip:Hurrying is not a good idea when it comes to drilling metal, no matter how small the hole is.
- Trick: we can put a small piece of cloth between the piece and the drill bit if it is thin sheets.
Many DIY jobs require drilling metal pieces, so it will be very useful to know the procedure to follow.

Drill a piece of metal
The first thing we will do is hold firmly the piece we want to drill. We will hold it on a workbench with vices or clamps, but we will not use just our hand, because if the drill bit gets caught it can hurt our wrist.
We will remove the percussion of the drill and use special bitsfor metal. We will hold the tool firmly with both hands and in a straight position. Some drill models include a level in the handle.

If the hole we need to make is of a very large diameter (8-12), it might be advisable to pre-drill with a smaller drill bit, even drilling the hole 2 or 3 times.
The most critical moment when drilling metal is the moment in which the drill bit comes out from behind. If we use too much force at that moment, the drill bit can catch and rotate the entire drill, which could hurt us.
It is best to gradually reduce the force applied and, when finished, hold the material firmly but without pushing too much.

Drilling thinner metal pieces
If the hole is in a sheet that is not very thick, it may happen that the drill does not come out completely round. It is a curious effect, but sometimes it remains hexagonal in shape and smaller than the diameter at which we have drilled.
In these cases, we can put a piece of wood under the metal right in the area where we are going to drill. Another solution is to first mark the hole a little and use a small piece of cloth (larger than the diameter at which we are drilling), putting it between the metal piece and the drill bit to continue drilling. This is a trick from machining workshops that is very useful with very thin sheets.
