Learn to Build a PVC Pipe Trombone! 2026

Learn to Build a Trombone from PVC Pipes, most of them are wind instruments: Flutes, pan pipes, etc. One of the most unique plastic instrument projects is the PVC trombone. Many PVC trombone designs require you to build jigs to bend the tubing, but you can avoid all that by using pairs of 90-degree elbows connected by short tubing to make the two U-bends you'll need. If you succeed, you can get good musical grades!

Step 1: What do you need?

2 20-inch lengths of 1/2-inch PVC pipe. Make the "disk" 6.5 cm in diameter.

• 2 Lengths of 20 Inch Lengths of 1 Inch PVC Pipe
• 2 3-inch lengths of 1-inch PVC pipe
• 1 3-inch length of 1/2-inch PVC pipe
• 1 30-inch length of 1-inch PVC pipe
• 1 1-inch length of 1/2-inch PVC pipe
• 1 2-inch length of 1-inch PVC pipe
• 2 x 1/2-inch 90-degree PVC elbows
• 2 x 1-inch 90-degree PVC elbows
• 4 PVC Tee Fittings, 1 Inch
• 2 PVC Tee Fittings, 1/2 inch
• 1.5-inch by 1-inch PVC reduction hood
• 1 garden hose connector
• PVC glue

Step 2: Make the bending template

First you will need to make a template to bend nice curves in your tubes.
Start with a sheet of plywood on which you draw a line down the middle so you can line it all up.
Next, put a bolt in the hole in the middle of the "disc" and put it in a very tight drill so it doesn't spin. Make sure you end up with a convex side of the "disc" that the tube fits into.

Punch a hole on the line in the plywood and attach the circle to it. Then take a piece of 3/4″ pipe and place it against the circle, take a piece of wood and place it on the other side so it fits snugly.

Mark the place and drill the two holes to join the block of wood with the two bold letters. Do the same with a piece of 5/8″ pipe. Be sure to align the block at a 90-degree angle to the pencil line to make it easier to see if the tube is bending enough.
Attach the block of wood to the board.

Well, this was the hardest part of this instruction, so it gets easier from now on.

Step 3: Measure and Cut the PVC Pipe

If you do not have the correct tube lengths measure and cut to the correct length.

• Two pieces of 5/8″, one 40 cm, the other 120 cm.
• A piece of 3/4″ 100 cm long.
• Don't forget to sand the edges.

Step 4: Bend the tube

If you have the correct lengths you can start folding. First mark the middle of the 100cm pipe and the 120cm pipe. This is important as you should try to keep both ends the same length and this way you can line it up with the mark on the bending template.

Before bending, you must attach the bending spring to the tube. If you don't have them, you could try filling the tubes with sand and closing them with a cork or something (I haven't tried this with PVC but I've done it with thin copper tubes before and that worked).

This is to prevent the tube from braking and to avoid dents. Although I have some dents in my curvature, it's not a big problem for the sound.

• Don't forget to adapt the bending template to the correct tube size.
• Make the push-up easy and make sure the bend is inthe middle all the time.
• After bending, you can pull the spring with the rope attached.

Step 5: Make the holder

I don't know if I called them correctly, but the pieces of wood, I called them holders, are there to keep the tube parallel and grip the trombone.

First measure the distance between the middle of the tubes of the 3/4″ tube piece and sign it on one of the wood pieces.

At these points, drill a hole with a 3/4″ speed drill. Don't immediately drill through it, but when the tip of the drill is on the other side, turn the wood over and drill from the other side. This way, you won't have splinters on the edges.

Do the same with the thinner tube but do the hold twice. One to keep the bent tubes parallel and another to join the straight end to the bent end.

Step 6: Add the mouthpiece

To fit the nozzle onto the 5/8″ tubing, you will need to fit a connector for that size. That way it really fits well in the tube. You don't need glue, but if you want, you can use PVC glue.

The larger the mouthpiece, the lower the notes that can be made.

Step 7: Add the funnel

My funnel, of course in the orange color, fits the 5/8″ pipe perfectly, but to secure it I glued it with PVC glue and taped it with electrician's tape.

Step 8: Putting the pieces together

I think you can find a way to put this together right?
Well, the thicker tube fits the thinner one so it's not a problem
