You can use the old armchairs to reuse them and make a beautiful reclining chair for the garden, this chair is very nice to receive your guests.
Everything used in this DIY project was rescued from the jumps with the exception of the screws that were in a basket and the Macrocarpia (Lemon Cedar) used in the arms that was from an old garden table and benches...
Step 1: Get in the car seat!

- Luckily, the La-Z-Boys come apart into 2 pieces and fit perfectly in the back of the car.
- The mechanism is seized and the handle has come loose, but it is going home.
- Although it is very dirty, it is not in very bad condition, however, since it was free, it doesn't really matter what you do with it.
- I was tempted to clean it and use it in my workshop shed, but in the end I decided against it
Step 2: Release the mechanism

- I gave the pivot mechanism a good spray with CRC (the NZ equivalent of WD40
- Let it soak for a couple of minutes and everything worked fine
Step 3: The framework
- I found this photo on the internet and it gave me the idea of what to do.
- Originally, La-Z-Boy chairs were patio furniture, so let's get back to that.
- Then all the leather has to go
Step 4: Dismantle for fun!

- I thought it would take about half an hour to remove the leather — boy, was I wrong!
- Many hours later it was done, I don't know exactly how long, but I remember counting to infinity. (it actually took about 5 hours)
- There were about 2,000 staples holding the leather together, and each one had to be removed with a screwdriver and pliers. I also removed the seat springs and straps (I have a good up cycle idea too!)
- Blood was spilled during this as the chair defended itself from being naked!
- I've kept some of the leather with a little cleaning, I'm sure I can use it for something!
Step 5: We can rebuild it!

- I used some leftover cedar tongue and groove offcuts to sheath the 2 sides, these were pieces that were too short after I had paneled the roof of my shed.
- I also gave all the wood a coat of oil stain to preserve the elements. This was put on with a piece of sponge (recycled from the upholstery)
Step 6: The back

- I cut a bunch of 50mm wide slats from 12mm plywood (marine ply) and attached them to the back frame.
- Once again, the cape was a jump to find
Step 7: Seat base

- Made it similarly to the seat base, this time with an 18mm floor layer, also a jump
Step 8: Footrest

- More of the same with a 12 mm layer
Step 9: Arms

- I thought the arms needed a little reinforcement, so I used some Macrocarpia (Lemon Cedar) from an old garden bench.
- The bottom was routed to fit over the cape arms and then screwed into place from below.
- I'm considering whether to cut a "beer can" hole in the arm.
- I also had to reshape one of the rear slats to allow the recline action to work
- Now everything I needto more finish.
Step 10: And there it is: Job done

With this you are ready to enjoy your own reclining garden chair.
