The day before, we hosed down the furniture to remove most of the dirt, but to make each chair as clean as possible, we also worked with an orbital sander. For all the hard to reach areas we use a couple of other pieces of sandpaper.

You don't need to go too aggressive with the sander. The results will still be out in the rain, but it still helps smooth the wood and remove any dirt that washing couldn't remove.

Step 4: Preparation of the templates

• Each template must be applied to each chair. To do this, you need to make sure the stencil is centered, level, and has extra papers next to it to prevent overspray.
• To center the template, mark the midpoint of the template and the saddle with a pencil.
• Now apply a light coat of spray adhesive to the back and wait a minute for it to dry a little. This way you can remove it without leaving residue.
• So apply the templates to the chair, using the center marks as a guide. Stand back to see if it's level. If not, delete and adjust until you are happy with it.
• With everything ready, tape or glue other pieces of paper to the side of the templates.

Step 5: Paint!

Apply light coats of paint to the stencil, moving from left to right or vice versa. Start each layer outside the edge of the template and then move it to the end. When you're close to being happy with the coverage, give it more time to dry between coats.

Step 6: Staining time

Place the chair on a tarp and reveal the spray stain. Fortunately, spray stain is more forgiving than spray paint, as the excess will be removed in the next step. So go ahead and have fun spraying everywhere.

Step 7: Cleaning

With a cloth or towelpaper ones, wipe the chair to remove excess stains and get a super smooth finish on the wood. If you leave a thick stain on top, it will take much, much longer to dry and be tacky. Which is nothing but fun.

Step 8: Admire your work

With everything ready, leave the furniture outside for a bit to dry completely. Enjoy the new look and get ready for a little get-together with friends to show it off.
