Simple Hanging Concrete Lamp! 2026

Simple Hanging Concrete Lamp, originally it was an attempt to drain molten concrete, which didn't work, so I ended up shaking and smoothing the concrete. This gives it a rough interior and a soft, smooth outer shell that is surprisingly strong but much thicker than the original model I wanted.

I'm new to concrete, but I love it, so if anyone has ever done a slide with concrete I would love some tips.

Simple Hanging Concrete Lamp!

What you need:

• Lamp
• ABS styrene 2.5mm
• Tape
• Hot glue
• Concrete
• Sand (fine sand)
• Knife
• Small piece of foam core

#1: Cutting the mold

• Print the two lamp guide templates on A3 paper and cut them out.
• Cover them with adhesive tape to your 2.5mm ABS styrene.
• Cut around each piece. You should have 5 pieces

#2: Make the mold

• Record the parts. I found this easier by taping on the straight edges first, folding and gluing them to fit the curved edge.
• Because these parts came from a small test model and are not from a CAD, the top is not quite flush, so I pushed it onto a small piece of foam core and then hot glued it over the top. This should create a flat top for the lamp.
• Cut or punch a small hole in this foam core for the lamp cord to thread through.
• Cut a circle plug the same size as your lighting fixture out of the foam core and wedge it into the fixture
• If your fixture has holes where concrete can enter, tape them. Wire the lamp inside and pull up. (Although I threw the entire fixture into the concrete in seconds, I should have thrown only half of the fixture leaving the top of the fixture exposed to stop heat buildup within the fixture and concrete.)

#3: Straightening

What DID NOT work: Slips

First I tried a 1:2 concrete and sand mix that was on the stream side. So I can pour it into my mold and rotate the mold, covering the walls with concrete.

Unfortunately the concrete only left a very thin layer on some areas of the walls that would never hold up, I thought I could do three or four layers to increase the strength, but just touching my mold the walls moved enough to break them.

Again, any ideas on how to achieve this would be great. I really want to see if I can get the concrete so thin that it shines in the light.

What worked? Pour and smooth concrete.

• With the slip liner lining the walls, create an even thicker concrete mix of 1:2 concrete to sand, but with less water than the slip form.
• Using a trowel (ABS piece) he hit the concrete against the walls where it would sit well.
• Using the same trowel (ABS piece) smooth out the texture you want for the interior.
• Let dry for 24 hours.
• Carefully remove the mold and hang.
