Sandpaper is one of the most used types of abrasives in different types of workshops and industries.
It is also known as sandpaper and it is a paper that serves as a support for an abrasive material, be it aluminum grains, among others.
Currently, mechanical sanding processes have invaded workshops, although traditional sandpaper still has its irreplaceable place in the workshop.
To obtain a good sanding it is not enough to choose the right sandpaper, it is also important to know some techniques.

Tools to use:
- Sandpaper block
- Sandpaper
For the sanding process use different abrasives, among which there are:
Silicon carbide:
It is the most abrasive and hardest substance known. It is a black, shiny mineral, of great hardness. Sandpaper made of this material is known as “water-based sandpaper”, since it is used moistened with water. They are used to finish and polish automotive lacquers, marbles, granites, glass, hard plastics, ceramics, varnishes, fillers and sealants in general. It is also excellent for abrading and polishing bronze, copper and aluminum.

Emerile:
It is an aluminum oxide with a low ferric oxide content. Due to its high durability and resistance, it is used for manual polishing of ferrous and non-ferrous materials, but its cutting action is slow and it wears out more quickly than previous materials.
White aluminum oxide: It is a synthetic abrasive, whose sharp edges are very durable. Use for all types of wood, plastic and fiberglass work.

Special aluminum oxide:
It is a synthetic mineral made at very high temperatures. Use to sand high resistance materials such as hard bronzes and steels.

Zirconium:
It is a black or steely gray metal, refractory, poor conductor of electricity and high mechanical and corrosion resistance. Use in sanding metals, aluminum, iron, copper, titanium and bronze.

Steps to work with sandpaper
#1. Cut the Sandpaper
- To cut a piece of sandpaper, place the desired size on the edge of a surface and pull down to tear it.
- It is not advisable to use scissors or other cutting instruments.

#2. Place the sandpaper on a block
- To facilitate the sanding task and ensure more uniform pressure over the entire surface, wrap the sandpaper over a wooden or plastic block.
- Paste some material on the wooden block that gives it a certain elasticity when pressed, for example: a piece of rubber, plastic foam, expanded polystyrene, corrugated cardboard, etc. This way you can absorb small imperfections in the wood.

#3. Sanding wood
- With the exception of roughing work, when using sandpaper on wood, always move in the same direction as the grain.
- Some sandpaper has arrows on the back, which indicate the direction in which it should be sanded.
- For very fibrous woods such as oak, use a plug that is rounded at the ends. This way you can sand without lifting the fibers.

#4. Sand turned parts
- To sand turned pieces, such as the rounded legs of a chair, or a wooden railing, fold or cut the sandpaper into elongated strips, take one end in each hand and use as if you were shining shoes.

#5. Sand the edge of a piece
- When you have to sand the edge of a surface, secure a piece of wood above and below the surface with clamps, so that they act as a stop and the sanding does not go where it is not needed.

#6. Sanding curved surfaces
- If the surface to be sanded is curved, use a hard artificial sponge pad.

#7. Clean up accumulated dust
- To remove the dust accumulated between the grains of a sandpaper, frequently hit the block wrapped with the sandpaper against a firm surface.

- A sandpaper saturated by use can be cleaned by running its back along the edge of the edge of a piece of wood. In this way, you will also obtain greater flexibility and will not form wrinkles.
