AI-enabled smart lamp-posts are arriving in the UK, raising serious questions about privacy and surveillance. These solar-powered iLamps from Conflow Power Group can recognize number plates, faces, and even incorporate future AI capabilities like gait analysis. How worried should we be?
What Are AI-Enabled Smart Lamp-Posts?
The iLamp is not just a streetlight. It doubles as a distributed AI datacentre that can generate revenue by processing data. Installed in a Warwickshire hospital car park, these lamp-posts are the first of their kind in the UK. They feature solar panels, automatic number plate recognition, and facial recognition capabilities.

Surveillance Potential and Government Deals
CPG has signed an agreement to supply 50,000 iLamps to Katsina state, Nigeria, adding vehicle and face surveillance. The UK home secretary has expressed support for a “panopticon state”, where citizens could be watched at all times. This raises concerns about who controls the data and how it might be used.
| Feature | iLamp Capability |
|---|---|
| Power Source | Solar panels with extra power revenue generation |
| Surveillance | Number plate and facial recognition; future AI gait analysis |
| Data Center | Distributed AI datacentre for revenue |
| Deployment | 50,000 units in Nigeria; UK pilot sites |
Key Privacy Concerns
- Mass surveillance without public consent or awareness
- Data ownership unclear – who profits from your movements?
- Future AI upgrades could include suspicious behavior detection
- Political misuse if home secretaries expand the system
How to Protect Yourself
Stay informed about local smart city projects. Advocate for transparency laws requiring public notification and opt-out options. Use privacy-focused tools like VPNs and avoid sharing biometric data unnecessarily.
FAQ
Can these lamp-posts record audio?
Currently, the iLamp focuses on visual data (images and video). However, future AI could integrate audio analysis, making it a comprehensive surveillance tool.
Who owns the data collected by smart lamp-posts?
That remains unclear. CPG may retain ownership, or it could be sold to third parties. Privacy advocates call for strict regulations on data handling.
Are these lamp-posts legal in the UK?
Yes, but their deployment has flown under the radar. The UK government has not fully assessed the privacy implications, leaving loopholes for expansive surveillance.
As AI-enabled smart lamp-posts roll out, the balance between convenience and privacy hangs in the balance. Stay vigilant and demand accountability from both companies and governments.
