What to Watch: Top TV Shows and Movies Streaming in Australia

This month's lineup features a mix of new releases and critically acclaimed films. Leading the charge is Netflix's ambitious adaptation of John Steinbeck's East of Eden, a seven-part series that delves deep into the classic novel. If you prefer the big screen, Ben Affleck's Animals offers a tense kidnapping drama, while the Australian stop-motion film Memoir of a Snail showcases local talent with a unique visual style.

With so many options, it can be overwhelming to choose. That's why we've broken down the top picks by genre and platform, so you can find your next binge-watch effortlessly.

East of Eden: A Modern Retelling

John Steinbeck's sprawling novel East of Eden has been adapted before, most famously in Elia Kazan's 1955 film starring James Dean. Now, Kazan's granddaughter, Zoe Kazan, has created and written a seven-part series for Netflix. This version gives the complex character of Cathy Ames, played by Florence Pugh, a central role. Set in California's Salinas Valley, the multigenerational story explores the tangled bonds between parents and children, reworking the biblical tale of Cain and Abel. With a more accommodating runtime, this series allows for deeper character development and a richer narrative experience.

For Australian viewers, this is a must-watch if you appreciate literary adaptations with stellar performances. Florence Pugh's portrayal of Cathy Ames is already generating buzz, and the series promises to be a compelling watch.

Animals: A Kidnapping Thriller with a Twist

Directed and co-written by Ben Affleck, Animals stars Affleck as Mark Kimball, a politician running for mayor of Los Angeles whose life is upended when his son is kidnapped. The supporting cast includes Gillian Anderson as a mysterious fixer who delivers lines like, "Power creates leverage, and leverage dictates outcomes." Affleck has described the film as essentially about marriage: "What it means to attach yourself to someone, the bargains and exchanges." This thriller promises to keep you on the edge of your seat while offering a deeper commentary on relationships.

If you're a fan of political dramas with personal stakes, Animals should be on your list. It's a gripping watch that combines suspense with emotional depth.

Memoir of a Snail: Australian Animation at Its Best

Australian cinema shines with Memoir of a Snail, a stop-motion film that has already won accolades. Directed by Adam Elliot, known for his distinctive aesthetic, the film tells the story of Grace Puddle, a lonely woman who hoards snails. It's a bittersweet tale of love, loss, and resilience, brought to life with meticulous craftsmanship. This is a must-see for fans of unique animation and heartfelt storytelling.

For those who appreciate homegrown talent, Memoir of a Snail is a gem. Its blend of dark humor and emotional depth makes it a standout in this month's streaming lineup.
