Gambling reform is back in the spotlight as Labor MPs urge Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to go harder on curbing online gambling advertising. The push follows sensational evidence revealing betting companies providing problem gamblers with illicit drugs and access to sex workers, sparking a bipartisan backlash.
Why Labor MPs Are Demanding Stronger Gambling Reform
The government's current plan to limit advertising and boost the existing self-exclusion register is facing tough scrutiny. Labor MP Louise Miller-Frost, who was part of the parliamentary inquiry chaired by the late Peta Murphy, said the evidence is compelling. “They are targeting a population that is known to be vulnerable,” she said.

Fellow Labor MP Alicia Payne echoed the sentiment, saying the legislation is a step in the right direction but more is needed. “The evidence is deeply concerning, especially as anyone who has opened a sports betting app knows that inducements to bet more started straight away,” she added.
The Shocking Evidence Against Betting Giants
This week, revelations from Sportsbet and Tabcorp about providing illicit drugs and escorts to problem gamblers have ignited calls for a tougher crackdown. The Coalition is urging opposition leader Angus Taylor to propose a much stronger response, while the Greens have dismissed the current legislation as ineffective.
Comparing Current Legislation vs. Full Ad Ban
| Aspect | Current Government Plan | Full Ad Ban (Recommended by Inquiry) |
|---|---|---|
| Advertising Limits | Partial restrictions | Phased-in complete ban |
| Self-Exclusion Register | Boosted but voluntary | Mandatory and enhanced |
| Protection for Vulnerable | Moderate | High |
| Industry Accountability | Limited | Strong penalties |
Key Takeaways for Gambling Reform Advocates
- Stronger legislation is needed to protect vulnerable Australians from predatory betting tactics.
- Full advertising ban remains the gold standard recommended by the Peta Murphy inquiry.
- Bipartisan support is growing for a tougher crackdown, but political will is essential.
- Self-exclusion systems must be improved to truly help problem gamblers.
Internally, some Labor MPs feel emboldened by recent changes to the ALP national platform and the public backlash. One MP called the revelations “obviously disgusting,” while another noted that more work is needed over time. The committee will continue to highlight these issues, and the pressure is mounting on Albanese to act decisively.
