Mushroom murderer Erin Patterson's appeal against her convictions is underway in Victoria, with her lawyers arguing the guilty verdicts should be overturned. Patterson, 51, was found guilty of murdering three relatives and attempting to murder a fourth at a beef wellington lunch in 2023. The appeal hearing began today, with Patterson appearing via video link from the Dame Phyllis Frost centre.
Appeal Hearing Details
Patterson's legal team is challenging the convictions on multiple grounds, including alleged errors in the judge's instructions to the jury. The sole surviving lunch guest, Ian Wilkinson, attended the hearing and offered forgiveness, stating he is no longer a victim. The Director of Public Prosecutions is also appealing the sentence, calling it "manifestly inadequate".

Key Arguments in the Appeal
The defence argues that the evidence was circumstantial and that the jury may have been prejudiced by media coverage. The prosecution maintains that the forensic evidence linking Patterson to the mushroom poison is strong. The court heard testimony from expert witnesses on both sides, with the appeal expected to last several days.
