European Athletics Championships Ticket Prices Spark Backlash 2026

The European Athletics Championships ticket prices have ignited a major backlash as fans and insiders criticize the high costs and empty seats at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium. With top-tier tickets at £110 and food prices soaring, the event has become a flashpoint for debates on affordability and event management.

High Ticket Prices and Empty Seats: A Growing Concern

The championship, which features stars like Keely Hodgkinson and Amy Hunt, has seen significant gaps in the stands, particularly in the cheaper seating areas. Category C tickets at £60 and Category D at £40 remain visibly underfilled, while the more expensive Category A (£110) and B (£90) seats have drawn better attendance. This paradox has puzzled organizers and fans alike.

BBC commentator Steve Cram voiced his disappointment, noting the sparse crowds down the back straight. "A little disappointing in terms of spectators," he said. "Particularly down the back straight there. There's not very many people at all in those stands." The official attendance on Monday was over 13,000, but the 23,000-capacity venue appeared barely half full to most observers.

Food and Parking Costs Add to Fan Frustration

Beyond tickets, fans have slammed the exorbitant prices for concessions and parking. A barbeque pork roll costs £18.50, a bratwurst hot dog £15, and a bottle of water £3.95. Parking at the park-and-ride scheme is £22.50, with a cheaper but inconvenient park-and-walk option at £17.50, requiring a 45-minute stroll.

Jenny Meadows, who coaches Hodgkinson, echoed these concerns on X: "Hearing from fans re high ticket prices, parking issues and even people not knowing it was taking place." This lack of awareness and accessibility has led to questions about Birmingham 2026's outreach to casual sports fans.

Impact on Future Championships and London's 2029 Bid

The timing of this backlash is awkward, as London's bid team for the 2029 World Athletics Championships makes its final presentation on Friday. The empty seats and negative publicity could influence perceptions of the UK's ability to host major athletics events. Nick Harwell, Amy Hunt's agent, tweeted "Crazy prices" after her gold medal win, highlighting the dissonance between athletic success and fan experience.

Comparing Ticket Prices Across Major Championships

To understand the scale of the issue, here's a comparison of ticket prices for recent major athletics events:

As the table shows, Birmingham's prices are significantly higher, especially for the cheapest seats, which may deter casual fans and families. The higher-priced categories have better attendance, suggesting that dedicated athletics fans are willing to pay, but the broader public is not.

Key Takeaways for Event Organizers

• Pricing strategy must balance revenue with accessibility to avoid alienating casual fans.
• Concession and parking costs significantly impact the overall fan experience and should be reviewed.
• Marketing and awareness are crucial; many locals were unaware the event was taking place.
• Empty seats undermine the spectacle and can harm future bidding efforts.

Addressing these issues is vital for the success of upcoming championships and the reputation of the sport. As Birmingham 2026 continues, organizers may need to adjust pricing or offer promotions to fill the stands and restore confidence.
