Flight attendants face increasing challenges with drunk passengers and air rage incidents, as recent events show a British holidaymaker trying to kiss a male crew member and mid-air brawls. These behaviors highlight a growing trend that threatens cabin safety and crew well-being.
The Rise of Air Rage Incidents
Post-COVID, air rage incidents have skyrocketed. In the US, 2021 saw more reports than the previous three decades combined. Mask non-compliance added a new category of misconduct, while drunk passengers like those on Jet2 and BA flights cause disruptions.

British Passengers: A Pattern of Excessive Drinking
Flight attendant Thomas notes, "British passengers always drink like they’ve never drunk before." This behavior leads to arrests, lifetime bans, and canceled flights. In February, Jet2 banned two passengers after a brawl from Turkey to Manchester, and BA canceled a Barbados return due to intoxicated crew.
| Incident Type | Example | Consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Drunk passenger assault | British holidaymaker kissing flight attendant | Arrest at Palma airport |
| Mid-air brawl | Jet2 flight from Turkey to Manchester | Lifetime ban for two passengers |
| Intoxicated crew | BA flight from Barbados | Flight canceled |
Safety Risks for Crew Members
Unite union reports that 34% of female cabin crew have faced sexual assault at work. Additionally, 67% experienced unwanted flirting, and 65% heard sexually offensive jokes. These statistics underscore the need for better protection.
Key Takeaways for Travelers
- Always drink responsibly on flights to avoid bans or arrest.
- Respect crew members and follow safety instructions.
- Report any abusive behavior to airline staff immediately.
Industry Response and Legal Gaps
The UK government is discussing permanent bans for abusive passengers across all airlines. Currently, airlines can issue lifetime bans but cannot share data, allowing offenders to book elsewhere. IATA warns that prosecution numbers are unreliable due to jurisdictional gaps.
