The Iran war casualties revision by the Trump administration has sparked fierce backlash from military veterans, who call the Pentagon's reclassification a "huge disrespect" to fallen service members. In a quiet weekend update, the Department of Defense—renamed the Department of War under President Trump—added over 140 wounded troops to the Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS) and introduced a new category labeled "Overseas Operations" for personnel killed and wounded starting July 7. This move splits the casualty count from the beginning of the US-Israel war on Iran, effectively downplaying the sacrifices of four service members killed by Iranian forces: 1st Lt Tyler James Feehan, Pvt Isabella Gonzales, Sgt Angel S. Rampersad, and Sgt Michael Emmanuel Swinton.
The Pentagon's Controversial Reclassification
According to retired US Rear Admiral Michael E. Smith, founder of National Security Leaders for America, reclassifying these deaths as "Overseas Operations" rather than war casualties is "ludicrous." He stated, "To claim that they weren’t killed as a result of the war – oh, it was just overseas operations – is just ludicrous." The revision alters the historical record and affects how families and the public perceive the cost of conflict.

Tristeza Ordex, a US Marine Corps veteran and national organizer at VoteVets, emphasized that this is not just about numbers but about accountability. "I definitely think that this isn’t an issue just about numbers, but also about accountability," she said. Ordex recalled attending ramp ceremonies during her deployment to Afghanistan, honoring fallen soldiers before they were brought home.
Impact on Families and Veterans
Private Isabella Gonzales, 19, from Carrollton, Texas, was among those killed. Ordex, who enlisted in 2004, was deeply moved thinking about Gonzales' age. "Thinking about it now makes me emotional, to think about how we have people coming home now … 19 years old," she said. "I think about people like her that were excluded. Not only are Latinos being excluded from so much more and being targeted: we have this person that paid the ultimate sacrifice for this country who isn’t even being recognized as a casualty of this war."
Comparison of Casualty Classifications
| Classification | Criteria | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| War Casualties (previous) | Direct result of hostilities in designated combat zones | All four service members killed by Iranian forces |
| Overseas Operations (new) | Non-combat or ambiguous operations outside designated war zones | Same incidents rebranded starting July 7 |
Key Takeaways
- Reclassification downplays the sacrifice of service members killed in action by Iranian forces.
- Veterans and their families feel disrespected and demand accountability.
- The move may affect benefits, recognition, and historical records.
- Critics argue it is a political maneuver to obscure the true cost of the Iran war.
FAQ
What is the Pentagon's new casualty category "Overseas Operations"?
It is a classification introduced by the Department of Defense (now Department of War) to separate casualties starting July 7, 2024, from the official Iran war tally. It includes service members killed or wounded in operations not designated as direct combat, but critics say it misrepresents the nature of their deaths.
Why are veterans calling this a "huge disrespect"?
Veterans believe the reclassification minimizes the ultimate sacrifice made by soldiers like Pvt Isabella Gonzales and Sgt Michael Swinton, who were killed by enemy fire. They argue it undermines accountability and disrespects the families who lost loved ones in direct combat.
How does this affect the families of the fallen?
Beyond the emotional impact, the reclassification could potentially affect benefits, memorial honors, and how these service members are remembered. Families may feel their loved ones' sacrifices are being erased from the official war record.
As the debate continues, veterans groups are calling for transparency and a reversal of the policy. The Trump administration's defense officials have not commented on the controversy, but the damage to trust among military families is already evident.
