The London Underground toxic dust risk has been thrust into the spotlight by a whistleblower who was unfairly sacked after raising concerns about asbestos and other hazardous materials. Micky Steeds, a former cleaner, worked in tunnels and vents, often without proper protective gear, exposing himself and passengers to dangerous substances.
What Is the Toxic Dust on the London Underground?
The dust found in the London Underground contains a mix of harmful particles, including asbestos, chromium, arsenic, silicates, and iron oxide. These substances can cause serious health issues, such as lung disease and cancer, especially with prolonged exposure.

How Does the Dust Affect Passengers?
While passengers may not inhale as much dust as workers, frequent commuters could face elevated risks. Studies have shown that air quality on platforms can be poor, with high levels of particulate matter. The whistleblower's case highlights the need for better monitoring and safety measures.
| Substance | Health Risk | Exposure Source |
|---|---|---|
| Asbestos | Lung cancer, mesothelioma | Old cables, insulation |
| Chromium | Respiratory irritation | Metal dust from trains |
| Arsenic | Skin and lung issues | Soil and construction debris |
| Iron Oxide | Lung inflammation | Brake dust, track wear |
Key Takeaways from the Whistleblower Case
- Lack of protective equipment: Workers were not given proper masks for 15 months.
- Improper training: Asbestos handling training came 19 months after starting work.
- Hazardous waste dumping: Toxic dust was disposed of in general waste bags, not special waste.
- Whistleblower retaliation: Steeds was unfairly sacked after reporting concerns.
What Can London Underground Users Do?
Passengers can minimize exposure by avoiding deep breathing near vents or lift shafts and staying informed about air quality reports. Transport for London has stated they are reviewing safety protocols, but advocacy groups call for independent audits.
