Mexico's Top University Orders 58,000 to Resit Entrance Exam 2026

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (Unam) has ordered 58,000 students to resit their entrance exam after a cheating scandal erupted, with abnormally high scores raising alarms. This unprecedented move highlights the challenges of maintaining academic integrity in the digital age. Unam, Mexico's largest and most prestigious university, is taking corrective action to ensure fairness and equity in admissions.

What Happened at Unam's Entrance Exam?

Nearly 160,000 students took the entrance exam earlier this summer, which was administered fully online for the first time. The test used an AI-powered webcam with voice and facial recognition to monitor candidates and prevent cheating. However, the results revealed that these measures failed to stop widespread fraud.

Between 2021 and 2025, only 3.5% of applicants scored 100 or more out of 120. This year, that figure jumped to 16%. The proportion of students achieving 110 or more increased sixfold, from 0.9% to 5.5%. Almost 30% of medicine program candidates scored 100 or more, compared to just 9% last year.

The Cheating Scandal and Public Reaction

The suspicious results sparked a national scandal, prompting Mexico's president, Claudia Sheinbaum, to suggest that the attorney general may need to investigate. Hundreds of Unam applicants protested in Mexico City, blocking major thoroughfares against the mandatory resit exam. Unam's rector, Leonardo Lomelí, apologized to candidates who were fairly accepted but emphasized the need to ensure certainty and guarantee equity.

How AI Proctoring Failed to Stop Cheating

The AI-powered webcam system was designed to detect suspicious behavior, but it clearly fell short. This raises questions about the reliability of AI proctoring in high-stakes exams. The university is now moving to an in-person resit to restore trust in the admissions process.

Lomelí stated, "The Unam, the home of science, humanities and understanding, knows how to recognize mistakes and self-correct. There is no evasion or complacency. There is responsibility and we act accordingly."

Key Takeaways for Academic Institutions

• AI proctoring is not foolproof and can be bypassed by determined cheaters.
• In-person exams remain the gold standard for high-stakes admissions tests.
• Transparency and swift corrective action are crucial to maintaining institutional credibility.
• Students must be protected from unfair penalties when systemic failures occur.

What This Means for Unam Applicants

The 58,000 students affected will need to resit the exam in person, a process that may cause anxiety and inconvenience. However, the university argues that this is necessary to ensure that every candidate has an equal opportunity. For those who scored legitimately, the resit is an unfortunate but necessary step.

Unam's decision sets a precedent for other institutions grappling with online exam integrity. As remote learning becomes more common, universities must invest in robust anti-cheating measures or revert to traditional testing methods.

Future of Entrance Exams in Mexico

This incident may lead to a broader review of how entrance exams are conducted across Mexico. Unam's rector has promised to self-correct, and the resit is a clear sign of accountability. The university's reputation for excellence depends on fair and transparent admissions.

For now, affected students are urged to prepare for the in-person resit, which will be held under strict supervision. The university has not yet announced the exact date, but it is expected to take place in the coming weeks.
