Disposable barbecue ban calls are intensifying in England and Wales as farmers and landowners warn of severe wildfire risks. The National Farmers Union, firefighters, and MPs are urging retailers to halt sales and local authorities to enforce restrictions. With record heatwaves and drought, a single spark can devastate crops, wildlife, and property.
Why the Disposable Barbecue Ban Is Critical
The UK has experienced unprecedented dry conditions, making vegetation highly flammable. According to the National Farmers Union, over 20,000 hectares have burned this year, affecting every region. The deputy president, Paul Tompkins, emphasized that a stray match can wipe out months of hard work in minutes.

Impact on Agriculture and Environment
Wildfires not only destroy harvests but also damage soil health and grassland productivity. Farmers face long-term consequences, including loss of livestock and infrastructure. The climate crisis has supercharged heatwaves, making fire prevention more urgent than ever.
Retailer Response and Public Action
Most major supermarkets have already stopped selling disposable barbecues, but they remain available in smaller shops and online. The MP Jon Pearce has written to retailers, urging them to follow suit. Local authorities are being encouraged to issue public space protection orders to ban barbecues, campfires, and camping stoves in high-risk areas.
Key Takeaways for Campers and Outdoor Enthusiasts
- Opt for reusable, gas-powered grills or picnic foods instead of disposable barbecues.
- Always check local fire warnings and adhere to any bans or restrictions.
- If you must use a barbecue, keep it on a non-flammable surface, away from dry grass.
- Have water or a fire extinguisher nearby and never leave a lit barbecue unattended.
- Dispose of ashes safely—cool them completely before disposal.
Comparison: Disposable vs. Reusable Barbecues

| Environmental Impact | Single-use, non-recyclable waste | Reusable, less waste |
| Cost Over Time | Cheap upfront, but repeated purchases | Higher upfront, but long-term savings |
| Convenience | Portable and easy | Heavier, requires setup |
