The Artemis II crew has earned the top US space medal for their historic lunar journey, marking a new milestone in space exploration. The crew of four astronauts will receive the Congressional Space Medal of Honor on August 28 at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston.
Artemis II Crew's Record-Breaking Mission
Commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, and mission specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen were selected for this prestigious honor after their 10-day mission that began on April 1. The crew broke Apollo 13's record for the farthest distance traveled from Earth, reaching 252,756 miles (406,771 km) as they swung above the lunar surface.

This achievement surpasses the 1970 record of 248,655 miles set by Apollo 13, demonstrating significant progress in NASA's plans to return to the Moon and eventually reach Mars. The mission ended with a textbook splashdown in the Pacific Ocean, bringing the astronauts safely back to Earth.
Congressional Space Medal of Honor
The Congressional Space Medal of Honor is the highest award for space achievement in the United States. Only 30 astronauts have received this honor, including Neil Armstrong and John Glenn. The medal is awarded by the President, and in this case, Donald Trump made the selection after NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman recommended the crew.
The ceremony will be held at the Johnson Space Center and will be live-streamed on NASA's website. The crew's achievement has been celebrated at the White House, where President Trump, who turned 80 in June, joked about his own physical fitness.
