Fame the Musical Review: Stardom Seekers Light Up the Stage 2026

Fame the Musical review: this high-octane revival at Theatre Royal Plymouth breathes fresh life into the classic tale of fame-hungry students. With a book by Jose Fernandez, music by Steve Margoshes, and lyrics by Jacques Levy, the production erupts like a shaken can of soda, filling the vast stage with guts and gusto.

Fame the Musical Review: A Revival That Packs a Punch

Directed and choreographed by Tom Jackson Greaves, soon to choreograph the West End's Rent revival, this production is fueled by an exuberant cast. Shanay Holmes, though a shade young for Miss Sherman, is the driving force whose narration carries the class through a four-year cycle at a prestigious New York performing arts school. Her vocals are the show's dynamite.

The storylines have been tweaked and songs cut, but the production captures the round-the-clock toil and sheer determination of these aspirants. Early number Hard Work sets the scene with movement filling every corner as the students stretch, practice scales, and pirouette across the stage.

Lighting and Set Design Enhance the Theme

Richard Howell's lighting visualizes the sense that the students' whole world is a stage by casting a giant spotlight on Soutra Gilmour's fortress-like school set, while life beyond remains in shadow. Nods to the 1980s come in the form of leg warmers and squealing tape recorders being rewound.

Gritty Moments Handled with Greek Tragedy Elegance

The production doesn't shy away from the story's grittier moments, including the fate of the initially spunky Carmen (Talia Palamathanan). However, as in a Greek tragedy, these events take place offstage and are reported back, adding a layer of dramatic tension.
