The wild true story behind the 2005 British hood movie Breakin' the Cycle, which was seized by police, is more compelling than the film itself. This article explores the film's chaotic production, its infamous cast, and the new podcast that revisits its legacy.
The Unlikely Origins of Breakin' the Cycle
Two of Hackney's most notorious drug dealers decided to go straight and become movie producers. Colin Browne, the leader of the gang Love of Money, wrote the screenplay while serving a prison sentence for cocaine smuggling. He directed the film with plans to take it to Cannes.

The production was plagued by real-life gang warfare and an elitist, perhaps racist, film industry. The cast included rapper Lethal Bizzle and Bradley McIntosh from S Club 7, who was trying to escape his clean pop image.
Chaos on Set: Petrol Bombs, Drugs, and an Accidental Stabbing
Filming was marked by comedic chaos and danger. There were petrol bombs, drugs, and even an accidental stabbing. The raw footage was eventually confiscated by the Met police, and the rough cut was lost for years.
Despite the turmoil, the film represented big dreams of making a different life through art. Browne was killed shortly after filming finished, adding a tragic layer to the story.
The Podcast: Shadow World: Breakin' the Cycle
Lewis Albrow, the film's editor, stayed in touch with D, Browne's right-hand man, over two decades. After D's release from prison, they collaborated on a BBC Radio 4 podcast that tells the full story. D provides deep and truthful answers about his past and his pursuit of a new future.
The podcast is a fascinating look at crime, art, and redemption, with D as the central voice.
