In the heart of Lebanon, the art of church-bell making survives through the Naffah family, now in its third century of crafting bells that resonate across the Middle East and beyond. The story of Lebanon’s only church-bell maker begins with a rifle and a twist of fate in the 18th century.

The Origins of a Bell-Making Dynasty

In the 18th century, Youssef Gabriel, a local metalworker in Beit Chabab, was secretly making rifles for Arab revolutionaries fighting the Ottoman Empire. According to one legend, a Russian engineer arrived in town to make a church bell. Gabriel shadowed him and quickly mastered the process. Another version says the Maronite patriarch, frustrated by Ottoman restrictions on importing bells, tasked Gabriel with creating one. After several attempts, he succeeded and converted his gunsmithy into Lebanon’s first church-bell foundry. The village, impressed by his skill, renamed him Youssef Naffah—naffah meaning “useful” or “successful” in Arabic.

Three centuries later, the Naffah family still operates the last remaining church-bell foundry in Lebanon. Once one of 10 family-owned foundries, the workshop now run by master bell-maker Naffah Naffah and his two sons is the sole production center for church bells in the country. It also supplies bells to much of the Middle East and Lebanese diaspora communities in Europe, Australia, and the US.

The Craft of Church-Bell Making

Naffah, 57, explains that each bell is a unique creation, requiring precise metallurgy and tuning. The process involves casting molten bronze—typically 78% copper and 22% tin—into molds, then carefully tuning the bell to achieve the desired tone. The family’s bells are known for their rich, resonant sound and durability.

Despite the availability of modern automated bell production, the Naffah family adheres to traditional methods passed down through generations. This commitment to craftsmanship ensures that each bell carries the family’s legacy and the cultural heritage of Beit Chabab.
