Pergolesi’s L’Olimpiade album review highlights a baroque rarity brought to life with pacy conducting and a fine cast. This 2025 recording of Pietro Metastasio’s tale of dirty doings at the ancient Olympic Games showcases Pergolesi’s genius, despite his untimely death at age 26. The story follows Megacle, who competes in disguise for his friend Licida, only to discover the prize is Aristea, the woman he loves.
Pergolesi’s L’Olimpiade: A Baroque Masterpiece Revived
Premiered in 1735 and resurrected in 1937, Pergolesi’s version is among the finest of over 60 settings by composers like Vivaldi and Cherubini. The plot thickens with Licida’s cast-off mistress Argene masquerading as a shepherdess and the revelation that Licida is Aristea’s long-lost twin. This baroque rarity offers brain-addling complexity, but Giulio Prandi’s unobtrusive cuts trim the four-hour epic to a crisp two-and-a-half hours.

Conducting and Orchestra Performance
Giulio Prandi’s conducting is ideally pacy, ensuring the drama flies by. The Orchestra Ghislieri delivers sinewy, tightly sprung playing, though the recording lacks the sonic depth of Alessandro De Marchi’s 2010 version. Recorded in Teatro Pergolesi, an 18th-century theatre in Jesi, Pergolesi’s hometown, the album includes stage noise and intermittent applause, yet conveys the thrill of live performance.
Cast Highlights and Vocal Performances
In a fine cast, Carlotta Colombo stands out as a richly rounded Aristea, contrasted with Silvia Frigato’s plaintive Argene. Josè Maria Lo Monaco’s supple mezzo-soprano brings complexity to Licida, while Theodora Raftis is a convincingly boyish Megacle. These vocal talents animate this baroque opera with emotional depth.
