Rienzi, Wagner's early opera, makes its Bayreuth debut in a frenzied election drama that reimagines 14th-century Rome as a near-future dystopia. This production, directed by Alexandra Szemerédy and Magdolna Parditka, opened the 150th anniversary season and updates the historical narrative with smartphones, screens, and political slogans from recent US and global events.
Wagner's Controversial Opera Finally Arrives at Bayreuth
Adolf Hitler's favorite opera has long been avoided at Bayreuth due to its historical baggage. But Rienzi now takes the stage as an exception to the festival's usual canon of Wagner's 10 mature works. The handwritten score, given to Hitler, has disappeared, leaving no authentic version of this epic. Yet Bayreuth's acoustic magic imbues even repetitive passages with luminosity.

Production as Contemporary Political Theater
The staging transforms Rienzi into a political thriller. One faction holds signs reading “lock him up” while supporters chant “stronger together.” Events are filmed live and projected as “live from the Capitol.” The narrative weaves election drama, psychosis, and even incest into a dense, at times overwhelming, spectacle. A child dressed as Wagner directs a madcap ballet compilation of his operas, and Bible verses flash across the stage alongside endless pigeon video clips.
Musical Highlights
Conductor Nathalie Stutzmann crafted moments of chamber-music tenderness, majestic poise, and surging bass amid military marches and rousing choruses. Tenor Andreas Schager delivered a clarion, high-wattage performance in the title role, electrifying the audience.
