Robert Laidlow's Reality Eaters album is a wildly imaginative and intricate classical music journey that remains eminently approachable. Blending science, technology, and orchestral power, this NMC debut showcases Laidlow's unique voice. From Einstein-inspired piano concertos to AI-driven orchestral battles, the album offers a fresh listening experience for both classical enthusiasts and newcomers.
Exploring the Tracks of Reality Eaters
The album opens with Warp, a 12-minute piano concerto that proposes a musical solution to Einstein's field equations. Pianist Joseph Havlat navigates distorting orchestral space-time, with strident lines spiraling upward. The BBC Philharmonic, led by Vimbayi Kaziboni, provides vibrantly detailed support, leading to a serene conclusion.

Gravity: A Homage to Newton
The Piatti Quartet performs Gravity, a harmonically unstable yet compelling homage to Newton's universal law. At one point, the players plunge into the musical equivalent of a black hole, showcasing Laidlow's knack for dramatic sonic storytelling.
Silicon: AI Meets Classical Music
The centerpiece is Silicon, a three-movement work of symphonic proportions. The first movement, Mind, pits Laidlow's music against a machine trained to imitate his output. Body uses adaptive electronics for diabolical musical deepfakes. Finally, Soul sets the BBC Philharmonic against an AI algorithm trained on its own broadcasts, complete with phantom announcers.
