If your energy bills are through the roof, your house may be leaking heat. Five signs can reveal where warmth is escaping and how to stop it.

With energy costs still high, identifying heat loss is one of the fastest ways to reduce what you pay. From cold draughts to misted double glazing, your home often gives clear clues that it is not holding warmth efficiently.

Why Heat Loss Matters for Your Energy Bills

Heat naturally moves from warm to cold areas. In winter, your heating system works harder to replace warmth lost through walls, windows, roofs and floors. The worse your insulation and airtightness, the more energy you waste. According to the Energy Saving Trust, a detached house can lose up to 35% of its heat through uninsulated walls and 25% through the roof.

Spotting the signs early lets you fix problems before they drain your budget. Here are five common indicators that your house is leaking heat.

1. Cold Draughts Around Windows, Doors and Loft Hatches

On a breezy day, heat your home to its usual temperature. Then walk around with a candle, smoke pen (about £20) or thermal leak detector. A thermal leak detector flashes blue for cold, green for normal and red for warm, making draughts easy to pinpoint. Pay close attention to window frames, external doors, letterboxes, keyholes and loft hatches.

Sealing gaps with draught excluders, sealant or brush strips is cheap and effective. According to the Energy Saving Trust, draught-proofing can save around £45 a year on energy bills.

2. Water Trapped Between Window Panes

Misting or water between the panes of double glazing usually means the sealed unit has failed. “Once the seal has broken, the window may no longer insulate as effectively,” says Antony Heath, marketing and development director at Glevum Windows. The insulating gas escapes and moisture enters, reducing thermal performance.

If you see this, the unit likely needs replacing. It is often cheaper to replace just the glass unit rather than the entire window frame.

3. Condensation on Windows

Condensation on the inside of windows, especially in the morning, can indicate cold surfaces where heat is escaping. “It can have several causes, including poor ventilation,” says Oliver Novakovic, technical and innovation director at Barratt Redrow. Older single-glazed windows allow more heat loss, which makes condensation worse.

Improving ventilation, upgrading to double or triple glazing, and using extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms can help. Left untreated, condensation can lead to mould and damp.

4. The Heating Is Always On, but Your House Still Feels Cold

If your home struggles to maintain a comfortable temperature, it may be losing heat through walls, floors or the roof. Uneven room temperatures can also mean radiators need bleeding or heat is escaping faster in some areas. “The better a home is at retaining warmth through good insulation and airtightness, the less energy is needed to keep it comfortable,” adds Novakovic.

Check for insulation in the loft, walls and floors. Cavity wall insulation and loft insulation are among the most cost-effective improvements, saving hundreds of pounds annually.

5. High Energy Bills Compared to Similar Homes

If your bills are consistently higher than neighbours’ or friends’ in similar properties, heat loss is a likely culprit. Compare your usage on your energy account or use a smart meter to track consumption. A sudden spike without a change in habits often points to a leak or insulation failure.

Comparison of Common Heat Loss Areas

Area Typical Heat Loss Quick Fix
Walls Up to 35% Cavity wall insulation
Roof Up to 25% Loft insulation (270mm)
Windows Up to 20% Double glazing, draught-proofing
Floors Up to 15% Floor insulation
Draughts Up to 10% Seal gaps, excluders

Key Takeaways

  • Cold draughts, misted glazing and condensation are clear signs of heat loss.
  • Draught-proofing and insulation are low-cost, high-impact fixes.
  • Compare energy use with similar homes to spot hidden problems.
  • Addressing heat loss can cut bills and improve comfort.

FAQ

How can I check if my house is leaking heat?

Use a thermal leak detector or a candle on a breezy day to find draughts. Check for condensation, misted windows and uneven room temperatures. A smart meter can also reveal unusual energy spikes.

What is the most common area for heat loss in a home?

Walls are typically the biggest source, accounting for up to 35% of heat loss. Roofs follow at around 25%, then windows, floors and draughts.

Does draught-proofing really save money on energy bills?

Yes. Draught-proofing is one of the cheapest and most effective ways to reduce heat loss. It can save around £45 per year on energy bills, according to the Energy Saving Trust.

By acting on these five signs, you can stop your house leaking heat, lower your energy bills and keep your home warmer for less.
