The Trump nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia has ignited a firestorm on Capitol Hill, with House Democrat Brad Sherman demanding oversight hearings over concerns that exporting uranium enrichment technology could repeat past foreign policy mistakes. This agreement, signed Wednesday, allows the kingdom to enrich its own uranium for nuclear reactors, potentially triggering a regional arms race.
Why the Nuclear Deal with Saudi Arabia is Controversial
Critics argue that granting Saudi Arabia the ability to enrich uranium could accelerate nuclear proliferation in the volatile Middle East. Congressman Brad Sherman compared the move to arming the Shah of Iran in the 1970s, warning that the technology could eventually be used to develop nuclear weapons. The deal comes amid heightened tensions with Iran, including U.S. strikes on Iranian targets and Houthi attacks on Saudi oil tankers.
