The rare black-crowned night heron has been spotted at Somerset's Holnicote Estate, where an innovative river reset is creating a haven for birdlife. This elusive wetland bird was captured on camera in a restored landscape, highlighting the impact of returning rivers to their natural courses.
How River Restoration Attracts Rare Birds
Conservation experts at the National Trust estate have allowed a river to flow freely, transforming dry land into lush wetlands. The result is a wildlife oasis that draws rare species like the black-crowned night heron, white-tailed eagles, and white storks. Ben Eardley, project manager, noted that the estate's wet conditions provide a critical refuge as surrounding areas dry out.
