France Wildfires: Cap Ferret Evacuated as Spanish Blazes Merge 2026

France wildfires have escalated dramatically, forcing the total evacuation of the Cap Ferret peninsula as Spanish blazes merge near Madrid. More than 80,000 people have fled across both countries, with authorities scrambling to contain the devastation.

Cap Ferret Evacuation and Emergency Response

French officials ordered the complete evacuation of the Cap Ferret holiday hotspot by both land and sea. Spain declared a national emergency, and both nations activated the EU's Civil Protection Mechanism to secure international firefighting resources. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez warned of a “dramatic situation” after satellite imagery revealed the immense scale of the destruction.

Merging Wildfires Near Madrid

Spanish authorities are racing against time as two major fires in Madrid and Ávila threaten to merge into a single inferno. Nicanor Sen, the central government's delegate to Castilla y León, stated there is “very little time left” before the fires combine, potentially creating an even deadlier and more unpredictable blaze.

Both countries have deployed thousands of firefighters, aerial tankers, and military personnel. The intense heatwave and dry conditions have fueled the rapid spread, raising alarm over the role of climate change in exacerbating such disasters.
