The Hundred returns with hits and hope that fans feel the love again, as cricket's innovative tournament seeks to rekindle excitement after a mixed opening. The 2024 season kicked off at The Oval with a blend of music and sport, but the atmosphere revealed challenges ahead.
The Hundred's Opening Night: Hits and Misses
John Newman, known for chart-topping hits like Feel the Love and Love Me Again, performed between matches to a half-full SSE Energy Solutions Stand. Despite his energetic set, many fans and players remained disengaged, highlighting the difficulty of blending entertainment with sport.

Audience Reaction and Player Focus
While Newman shouted "I love you so much!" from the stage, a group of six fans didn't even turn around. Meanwhile, the SunRisers Leeds men's squad warmed up nearby, ignoring the fireworks and music. This contrast underscores the Hundred's struggle to captivate both casual attendees and hardcore cricket enthusiasts.
| Aspect | Opening Night 2024 | Previous Seasons |
|---|---|---|
| Attendance | Half-full stands | Variable, with some sellouts |
| Entertainment | Live music by John Newman | Varied acts, mixed reception |
| Fan Engagement | Low during musical interludes | Moderate, with focus on cricket |
Key Takeaways from The Hundred's Return
- Fan loyalty remains a hurdle, as entertainment alone may not sustain interest.
- Player focus on the game, like Jason Roy's awkward interview, shows cricket's priority over spectacle.
- The Hundred must balance innovation with traditional cricket values to win hearts.
- Future events may require better integration of music and sport to avoid disconnects.
Can The Hundred Win Back Fans?
The tournament's format—100 balls per side—aims to attract new audiences, but the opening night suggested a need for refinement. Cricket fans value the sport itself, and gimmicks may backfire if not executed thoughtfully. The Hundred hopes to build momentum through exciting matches and community engagement.
Future Prospects
With more games scheduled across the UK, organizers plan to tweak the fan experience. This includes improved scheduling, better integration of performances, and enhanced digital interaction. The key is to make every element feel essential, not forced.
