This DIY corner cabinet, perfectly integrated with the rest of the room, includes two closed compartments with doors and one open shelf. The idea to build this corner cabinet came from a problem during a renovation, but it can be considered a general solution for utilizing the corner between two doors where no traditional furniture would fit.

After removing a drop ceiling that significantly lowered the room height, with the intention of installing a new one closer to the original ceiling, it turned out that the upper bathroom drain pipe protruded from the slab much lower than the new drop ceiling level. This issue could have been solved by building a continuous horizontal or vertical structure in drywall, simulating a beam or column, to hide the drain connection. However, neither solution was aesthetically pleasing, so we decided to build a corner cabinet that would both hide the pipe and function as a corner cabinet with a small bar.
The DIY corner cabinet extends full height with a right scalene triangle base to better use the available space. The exposed vertical plumbing pipes are hidden with a 12mm MDF panel fixed to wooden strips anchored to the masonry. At the ceiling, a sort of box is built with a larger overhang than the cabinet to enclose the pipe, while at the base the recessed baseboard makes the cabinet appear suspended.
Tools and Materials Needed
- Plywood or MDF boards
- Wood screws and dowels
- Hinges for doors
- Wood glue
- Sandpaper
- Paint or varnish
- Drill and bits
- Saw (circular or jigsaw)
- Measuring tape and square
- Clamps
Step 1: Planning and Measuring
Start by measuring the corner space accurately. Determine the height, width, and depth of the cabinet. For this project, the cabinet has a right scalene triangle base to maximize the corner. Mark the positions of the plumbing pipes to ensure they are fully enclosed.
Step 2: Building the Frame
Cut the plywood or MDF boards according to your measurements. Assemble the frame using wood screws and glue. Make sure the structure is square and sturdy. For additional stability, consider using home improvement brackets.
Step 3: Adding Shelves and Compartments
Install the shelves for the two closed compartments and the open shelf. Use shelf supports or dados for a clean look. The open shelf can be used for decorative items or wall decor.
Step 4: Installing Doors and Hinges
Cut the door panels to size. Attach hinges to the doors and then to the frame. Adjust the hinges for proper alignment. You can choose from various hinge styles to match your design.
Step 5: Finishing Touches
Sand all surfaces smooth. Apply primer and paint or varnish as desired. Install handles or knobs on the doors. For a cohesive look, coordinate with lighting fixtures in the room.
Step 6: Concealing the Plumbing
Use the MDF panel to cover the vertical pipes. Attach it to the wooden strips anchored to the wall. At the ceiling, build a box with a larger overhang to hide the pipe. This creates a clean, finished appearance.
Step 7: Base and Final Assembly
Install the recessed baseboard at the bottom to make the cabinet appear floating. Secure the cabinet to the wall for safety. Add any final decorative elements to integrate it with the room.
